Are the maxis st tires any better than the rest. I have 230/80/16 tires now and I don't think I can go to the 235/85/16 due to clearance I have blown power King and marathons I am trying to find a good tire if there is one. I only have about 2 inches of clearance above these tires now.

Paul, there are 16" LT's in 215/85R16E that are 30.39" in diameter. They are rated to 2680 each and would be a good fix for your lighter weight.

Bridgestone Duravis R250 all steel or R265 2 ply poly carcass.

Or

Michelin XPS Rib

6-8 years of trouble free trailering, and you will not wear them out.

Chris

Both too wide.

A 215/85R-16 is spec'd to run on a rim width of 5.5" to 7" with 6" being normal. How wide are the rims in question here ?

In the world of 15" LT tires, one I am seeing be fit to several brands of new horse trailers is the GoodYear Wrangler HT. Tire rack has them so you can check the specs of them there.

Yep, Maxxis 8008 tires are certainly one of the better ST tires available and I've had great service from the sets on my TT, but with a 16" rim on a 5er that has had issues with blowouts I would definitely go with one of the LT tire options mentioned above.

Although Maxxix 8008 tires generally deliver increased reliability and longevity over competitor's tires in this category, they eventually succumb to the same ilks and demise inherent to ST tires after 4-5 years. They are indeed a good option for rigs that only have room for a 15" or smaller wheel.

I will agree on Maxxis for those with 15" rim. There are better choices for 16" rims that will last 6-8 years. Maxxis are not cheap and changing every 3-4 years is expensive.

On 5200lb axels with no extra clearance? If I remember you suggested g rated Sailuns would beat up my trailer. So are you saying now they are ok for 8400lbs on the axels? Just trying to understand what the other options are. I considered Sailuns but 110 psi seemed high for the load and running under pressure is not somewhere I want to go...thus the maxxis appear the best option. On a heavier trailer with 7000lb axel sailun no question.

I went from 235/80/16 tires to 235/85/16 tires and have no problems. Mine are only about 1 1/2 to 2" apart but I have put many thousands of miles on them.

I am going to disagree with Jim as the research I've done shows the maxxis to be a very good choice. I am putting maxxis on my trailer based on that research. They appear to be in high demand as I had to wait for my order but will change them out in the next week. 235 80 16. I am on 5200 lb axels and also don't have clearance for 235 85 16 Lt tires.

Not really as we have had around 30 members with Maxxis ST 8008 issues which is about the norm on other rv and non rv trailering websites.

Many folks upgrade to a LT E tire at 3042 lb capacity on trailers with 6k axles and smaller.

For 7k axles and maxed out 6k axles the ST 16" Sailun S637 G load range at 3750 lbs has been a winner.

If we knew what your trailers GVWR and 6k or 7k axles and gross axle loads we can give you a good idea on better tire selections for 7-8 years and 40k-60k miles.

I've had excellent results with Maxxis on my TT's.

I'll just add my vote to the others. Went from Marathons to Maxxis and never looked back. I am also very careful about speed and pressure.

When the first Towmax tire blew on my fiver (exactly 1 year after delivery) I replaced all 4 with Maxxis M8008 ST235/80R16 LR-E tires (rated at 3420 pounds carrying capacity each). I am now in my 3rd year of running them as a full timer. Doing great.

2 things are important - keep the air pressure where it should be (80 psi)and adhere to the ST tire 65 mph speed limit.
