My Dream Trip

I was thinking about going to Washington and Oregon in Aug. 1st thru Sept.30th spending 30 days in each state. I was wondering if this would be a good time to go not much as for rain & cloudy days. Or when would you go to these areas for your best experience of your dream trip.

I am one of the fortunate people who have lived most of my life in the Pacific Northwest. My work also allowed me to live and work in many areas of both states.

Despite our soggy reputation, we in the northwest enjoy a pretty mild climate year round, with what the garden books call a "brief but definate summer." August and September should be good for your trip. We ususally get a "Labor Day Storm" in early September, just enough to let us know summer is winding down.

As someone already said, the Cascade Mountains divide both states into roughly western 1/3 wet side and eastern 2/3 dry side. The east side is generally higher, drier, hotter in the summer and colder in the winter, with the possibility of morning frost in the higher areas in Sept.

The coast should have temps in the upper 60s/low 70s, with possible morning fog or drizzle with clear afternoons. Some tourists consider this cold, natives think it is swimsuit weather.

You didn't say what you were interested in seeing, so I won't bore you with generalities, but feel free to respond or PM me for my suggestions. However, since you are coming this far, if you plan on traveling the coast I would strongly suggest you get into northern California to see the coast redwoods, they are magnificent.

It's good you have about thirty days for each state. I've lived in both states for over thirty years each and still have a lot to see.

Not to brag, but the northwest has it all, beaches, prairies, mountains, lakes, desert, wheat fields and rain forests, cities and wilderness areas

Enjoy your trip, and stay longer nest time.

I live in Oregon as well right on the Coast. The end of September is my favorite time of the year. I like the first part of October as well. The wind dies down at the time of the year and if you time it right you might even get in a tuna trip or two. If I were you I would forget about the Washington coast not much to see except Mud flats. However the Washington Sound is a beautiful place. Lots of islands to explore and beautiful scenery.

The Washington Coast is not a bunch of "Mud Flats" the coast line is much lower in the southern part of the coast. The worst part/best part is that they allow driving on the beach, great for getting to your favorite clam digging spot, but makes getting from the dunes to the water a dangerous walk.
Even when I lived in Washington, I camped the Oregon Coast, NO Cars except for a very few locations.

Well those are two good months, one word reservations!
We live in Oregon and love the coast, many of the coastal CG are open year round. Many private campgrounds also.

It can be great year round, spent New Years at South Beach SP, just south of Newport temps between mid 30's to 60's during the day.

The Oregon and Washington coast can be wet anytime of year. Still striking in its beauty. We had lots of rain in our weeks there last year but none the year before. You bet we are headed back this year. Don't miss Canon beach and seaside.

We did the Oregon Coast this last May through July and plan to do it again this year...only in reverse.

We'll be in the Midwest, mainly Wisconsin from May through the end of August before heading back West.

Plan is to take the Northern Route to the Coast in September and slowly work our way South loading up on the delicious seafood again and just enjoying this beautiful part of the Country.

Probably stop at our home base in Reno before heading to S. AZ and possibly Texas for the winter.

Well, there really are 2 different Washingtons and 2 different Oregons.
East of the mountains and west of the mountains.
Both would be great those times of the year...August being the most crowded and the height of the camping season.
Eastern WA and OR can be hot and dry then. The Coast will be much cooler and subject to changing weather on a moment's notice.

Either way, both are fantastic RV destinations. Endless things to do and see and incredible natural beauty.
Have a good trip.
