X2 on Shore Acres, it's only a few miles past Sunset Bay. If you want a different pace than an RV Park check our Bastendorf which is a County Park or Sunset Bay State Park. The later will be tough to get spot in the summer months on short notice.

They have a lightship (The Columbia) that you can tour - although I heard they had to move it to rebuild/restore the dock. I don't know if it's back yet, but it's pretty cool. They have a working amateur radio station on board too. http://www.crmm.org/maritimemuseum_collection_lightshipcolumbia.html

Try to get up to Newport and see the aquarium there. The beaches there are nice as well, as are Lincoln City and Cannon Beach, but that's quite a bit north. If you do go up that far, check out Ecola State Park. Great views, some really clear examples of erosion and the power of weather, and it may look familiar if you watch movies.

If you can get to Tillamook, visit the Cheese Factory. There is a reason they have won awards. They also have cheeses there that you won't generally find in stores. They had a white cheddar garlic the last time I was there, and while it might sound a little odd, it was fantastic. It was great on burgers and the garlic was a really complimentary taste, not overwhelming.

Guess you have never crabbed in Dungeness, Wa or other popular Washington crabbing areas? Chris

If you're looking for a little excitement, try the one hour Oregon Dunes Sandrail Tour. SOOOO much fun. Read the reviews on TripAdvisor. Totally worth the $65 ticket price!

We stay north of Florence as we have family and friends in Florence and Bay Shore. There are a lot of places to visit from Florence north and I would find a closer campground, like South Beach or Beverly Beach near Newport for at least 4 days.

Here are a few things to do;

Things to do on the Coast(North of Winchester Bay);

All the state parks and picnic area/day use areas for beach combing

Winchester Bay for RV Park and County campgrounds, dunes

Florence for the jetties and the dunes, camping

Old Town Florence for Moโ€™s & BJโ€™s & shopping, camping

Sea Lion Caves for the view of Heceta Head Light and caves, day use

Cape Perpetua/Devils Churn

Yachats for shopping and views, beach combing, day use, kiting

Waldport for crabbing

Bay Shore for beach combing, kiting

Newport for the Aquarium, Old Town, shopping and the Brewery, kiting

Depot Bay for the Sea Hag

Lincoln City for the Factory Stores and Glass studios south side of town, blow your own glass float.

Otis for the Cafรฉ, best breakfast on coast that is cooked by someone else

Tillimook for the Cheese factory and ice cream

He didn't say when he was going. Crab season doesn't really pick up until late summer early fall. Crabbing is pretty slow for the next few months.

IMO skip the stinky smelly overpriced sea lion caves. We were extremely disappointed and a lot lighter in the wallet. Florence to the North is fun little town for shopping and hanging out for the day. If you like Oysters head into Winchester Bay just to the North. At the end of the pier there is an oyster house that sells some of the best I have ever had. There is also a pretty cool lighthouse at the top of the hill in Winchester Bay with a great lookout. They have daily tours that take you up inside.

If your the adventurous type check out one of the jetboat charters. There is a good one in Gold Beach (to the south) and another in Grants Pass that goes along the Rogue River.

One note not always know, the beaches in Oregon are public. From Washington to California. Now, not all are easily accessible, but they are public. This has resulted in a wonderful jewel on the west coast and as Russ stated, some of the best parks in the Nation. I would encourage to you explore as much of the coast as you can. The coast is up North has a different feel than down south, all gorgeous.

Just pick a direction and drive. While I personally would not advocate staying in one place on the coast, driving 4 hours northnor south will get you a long ways. Within that distance will be lots of beaches, light houses, Florence water front, Sea Lion caves,Bandon if your a golfer, and of course, the Oregon dunes for miles of sand in your face fun.

X2 or more,

You are a long way form Littlerock (just north of LA), could drive a couple hours north and see even more!!
The Coast is dotted with RV parks both privet and State. The State Parks in Oregon are some of the best in the Nation!!!

x2 On staying in one place - the winter of 2014 we stayed in 7 campgrounds on the Oregon coast for a total of 7 weeks

2015 we stayed in four campgrounds on the coast for a total of 3 weeks -

with kids I would stay in Newport - The Port of Newport has a nice park just south of the big bridge rate is $39 - lots to do in that area
