place to stay in DC area

Going to DC area in Oct. and will visit the Tomb of the Unknown, other monuments, and Smithsonian. looking for something close to their public transportation. Don't know anything about the area.

I am also planning a trip to DC. I plan on staying at the Greenbelt National Park in Green belt Md. It is run by the Park Service and will be $8/night with the old geezers pass

You may want to check out Pohick Bay Regional Park. Not only is it a nice park, but on the "safe" side of the beltway. Virginia. There are 2 subway stations within an easy 20-30 minute drive from the park. Don't worry - the subways are clean and safe.

Another suggestion. If you haven't been in DC before - get tickets for the Red Bus. They will take you all over DC and you can get on/off when you want. It shouldn't be too cold to ride the open upper deck in October. If it is - you can always ride inside the bus.

Cherry Hill is a nice place. The bus was nice except for one Saturday when we discovered that the service was cancealed due to lack of drivers. Had to get a cab from station back to CG. After that drove to the station on the weekend. Otherwise no problem.

Lots of votes for Cherry Hill. Never been there. We have done Bull Run in Manasses a few times. I imagine that it is far cheaper than Cherry Hill & not too far from public transport downtown. If you are a Civil War buff it is right next to the Manasses Battlefield. If you like aviation the Air & Space Museum at Dulles is not far at all.

TT: If you plan to use the WMATA (METRO) transit a lot while visiting DC, you can go online to their website HERE and purchase SmarTrip fare cards for everyone in your family. Very convenient and easy to use, and certainly beats having to screw around with the ticket machines in the stations. They are also "re-loadable" online or at machines in stations that handle SmarTrip cards. They are honored on both the Metro (trains) and Metrobus.

Enjoy. Politicians aside, DC is a great destination; can't get enough of it. :B

Stayed at Cherry Hill about 15 years ago. Rode the shuttle to the metro station first few trips, then drove myself. Started driving it because the metro drops you at the station, but there was no shuttle after a certain hour.
Had to call a cab, wait for 30 minutes with two children.

I stayed at Bull Run a few years ago. It was a nice campground.

It's the DOD employees that homestead at the Ft Meade RV park that makes it dificult to get in.Other than that,if you are authorized
to use the facilities,it's a great place to stay and visit DC.

We stayed on FT. Meade and drove to Union Station and parked there.
