Toy hauler on a gasser?

Looking at the lighter toyhaulers. Right now I cannot justify the extra cost for the Duramax (will only buy GM as I work there). Traveling mostly in Michigan. Looking at 1 ton ccsb...

Would only travel 8-10 times a year

I consider the 6.0 more a more powerful puller than the old 454, had both.
We had an '05 Roadtrek Class B motorhome on the 3/4 ton (2500) Chevy Express chassis. I weighed it, was 8000 lbs. We towed a 5500 lb travel trailer with it and it charged up mountain passes easily with 3.73 gears. I was amazed.

Having had a 6.0 and towed with it, I consider that a 10,000 pound max trailer tow vehicle.

How many people in your traveling party?

I'm towing a 7765 GVWR TT toy hauler with a 3.5 Ecoboost F150. Cruiser RV Funfinder Xtra XT-245. Could sleep 4 adults and two kids. Four total is probably the practical limit. Tiny bathroom.
Actual weight 7240. Uses up 80% of the 1607 lb. payload.

Define "light" toyhauler.

Gas engines can pull an awful lot of weight compared to engines from 20-30yrs ago.

Sad day when GM ditched the big block. My 12 dually with the 6.0, 4.10 gears and 6 speed tran has the max 5er around my 13.5k trailer. It's been to long since I looked at the numbers. It handles the unit fine but getting used to the high revs took awhile. Check the numbers in books and make sure you check the rear end ratios. You'll probably not find the lower gears on the lot. I ordered mine and it only took a month to get.

You will hear moans from the diesel fandom. There are many of us moving a lot of weight in motorhomes every day with gas engines. The current gasoline Chevy has about the same power as the Ford V10. You'll be fine.

Fiver or TT? We pull a fiver with max load of just under 12,000. We are out in the mountains and spend some time at 45mph on steep inclines. But it tows great as we have it set up.

You'll notice the need for a diesel on the mountain grades. Staying in Mich you shouldn't have any issues towing with a gasser.

We live and do most of our RVing here in the mountain west and four corner states, we have a 33' TT toyhauler that comes in at 10K# when fully loaded with toys and water. Our 3/4 ton Chevy Silverado 4x4 gets us everywhere we need to go, which is primarily high elevation camping.

Yeah, it revs up pretty good to get over some of the steep inclines, and yeah it can get quite thirsty doing so, but it is dedicated to hauling our rig around and just sits in the garage awaiting duty otherwise, works great for our situation. She loves to work and has always delivered.

You need to choose a toy hauler first then get a truck with capacity to tow it. You want a truck with extra capacity instead of getting something that is nearly maxed out.

Gassers will do fine as long as you're not close to maximum tow/cargo capacity.

I towed a 15,000 lb 5th wheel for years with a 1986 chevy gas 1 ton dual cc long bed with no major problems. On a 6% grade I would climb in first gear at 25MPH. Today's gassers have a lot more power than my 1986 truck did.
