Work and play or similar

Hello all,

I am currently a TC owner but I am looking at making the possible change to a toy hauler.

I have been looking around the majority of them are too big. I have found the Work and Play by Forest River. I do have a couple of questions for those who can help me.

What are the pros and cons to the Work and Play or something similar?

Why is it that I am having such a hard time finding used one?

Are they that good that people don't want to get rid of them or what?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Wow, what make and model A/C? Did the first 2 fail for the same reason?

I can't seem to find a model number but it is a Dometic unit and appears to be a Brisk II from the Dometic website.

Both units seemed to have lost the charge and both units failed after a 6+ hour trip. The last being a trip through West Virginia on I-77. I'm sure there are some people here that know what that trip is like.

When we got home from there, I went out to repair the panels that had fallen off the sides of the bed and decided to turn the A/C on since it was rather hot in there. It only blew out hot air at that point.

It is a new model A/C for this year and I guess the bugs weren't worked out yet. I will have to get the model and everything for you. It seems as if they acquired a leak of some sort. Much smaller size than previous units. Single unit works great for cooling a unit of this size, when it works.

Ok, so I pretty much read most of this and don't post much but I have to chime in here.

I have a Work and Play 30WRS and I would like to say that my wife and I preferred the sofa slide over the dinette of the 30WR. We do have a fold out dinette in the garage as well as another fold out sofa and it was the perfect setup for us. There is more floor space and feels much larger than the 30WR unit.

That being said, our unit has definitely not been without issues of any of the RV's currently being manufactured. In the first 6 months, we are now on the third A/C unit, the bed completely came apart, the doors on the pass-thru storage leaked, the pull down screen for the cargo door fell off and many other issues.

I dealt locally and my dealer has been great and Forest River has been great so far. Not sure what we will run into this season and I hope they will continue to take care of the issues. That will remain to be seen.

Now, this all being said, it appears that you are looking for a bigger garage than what we have on this one. My advice on anything that you buy would be to deal locally and not have to travel to get issues fixed. I fixed most of the problems myself, but certain things like the A/C units need to be fixed by the dealer and you certainly don't want to have to travel a long distance to have that taken care of.

On the smaller units the short height was a problem. The awning didnโ€™t have enough clearance.

We went from TH to TC, but not without looking to upgrade a bigger TH before we made the switch. Look at Feather Lite, In-Tech and Millennium trailers in addition to the Work and Play. I feel the others are a step above the quality of the Work and Play, yet are still car hauler based TH's with big garages.

We had a Weekend Warrior with almost 16' of garage, but really needed at least 18' so we didn't have to stack vehicles.

Thanks for the information, I have been looking.

Now that I know that about the WRS model I'm going to have to refine my research.

I'm looking around the the 34 or 38' foot model with at least a 14 to 16' garage.

I have a 30WR. I like the floor plan of the WR vs the WRS with the slide. With a slide you loose the tv platform, pantry and dynette. The dynette is replaced with a couch and portable table. The TV is relocated where viewing is not optimal if someone is cooking in the kitchen. The WRS has a little bigger bathroom.

I have not had any realy problems with mine. I would recommend that you shop around for your best deal on a new one. We drove to Iowa to get our fist work and play a 28BR and then we drove to Texas to get the 30WR. On the west coast the WR was going for around 35k at the time. I got the one in TX for 12k less than that. Worth the drive and made a road trip out of it.

What size are you looking for?

I appreciate all the information.

I am not into the fancy marble and such, when we go we tend to bring back some dirt with us.

If anyone knows of where there is a good one for sale with a 14' garage or longer, let me know. I am in the market and willing to travel to get one.

Thanks again, if there is anyone else out there that has any more information, let me know.

As far as pros and cons go, they are excellent TH's in my opinion for what I need one to do. Haul big motorcycles, or large John Deere Gator or my Jeep Wrangler which any of these they do very well. Now if you want fancy tile floors or granite counter tops and plush carpet, wrong rig. I had hoped to tell you where there was a really good used 30' with a 16' garage that I just traded in for a larger unit, but apparently they have already sold it. Good used ones are difficult to find, but they are there. Yes as otrfun states, they are a bit heavy, but they have really high payloads so it all depends on what toys you want to take and play with.

Thanks
FWIW, you're more likely to find used 18EC's because they're the most popular (typically $18k discounted when new). They're more likely to be found in the mid-west. Suggest searching on rvtrader.com and rvt.com.

Work & Plays are a bit on the heavy side compared to other toy haulers of similar length. IMO, the extra weight is due to better floor bracing, use of heavier plywood/fiberglass walls, and the aluminum roof construction. The aluminum roof is a plus; but, if you're looking at used ones be sure and thoroughly check the interior/exterior walls for water damaged delamination (tap around and listen for a change in pitch). Although the aluminum roof does have a good overall reputation, *if* a leak does occur it is VERY expensive to repair if the plywood siding is damaged.
