Homebase, Tillamook Oregon vs Americas MailBox SD

We are considering changing our resident State from SD to Oregon. Homebase in Tillamook appears to be the same/similar to AMB. We've been with AMB for 6 years and have been satisfied with their service. I would appreciate real life feedback from anyone using Homebase as a mail forwarding service. TIA....Dennis

We prefer Face Rock Creamery in Bandon OR .. but it is really a toss up for us whether in Bandon or Tillamook ... gotta go and get ice cream.

BTW across from the Creamery in Tillamook is a fantastically good fish store ... looks a little "iffy" from the outside but good food and they sell retail also.

My domicile is at a PMB in Aberdeen, WA (Grays Harbor County). It is a county that does not require emissions testing. Vehicle registration and renewal email remainders can be done on-line. The car is $48.75/year. The 30' MH is $116.75/year. No income tax.

The downside of the emissions testing WA counties for an RVer is that you have to drive to that county for the emissions test, BEFORE renewing the vehicle registration. If you're parked for the winter and have a winter renewal then that is a PITA.

If the OP wants to hang out in Oregon but be a WA resident they may want to make their domicile in a WA border county other than Clark County.

You are getting some bad info. Been an Oregon resident for 62 years and I used to work at DMV. Remember you will have Oregon income tax if you are a resident. No sales tax at all. Registration fees for an RV are by the foot and are the same every 2 years. First year might be more for title transfer fees. Our 40' mh is about $350. Pickup is about $80. No smog inspections unless your 'address' is one of the larger metropolitan areas like Portland or Eugene. We use a mail service in Stayton, Oregon and have never had a smog inspection.

Oregon has high income taxes and requires annual vehicle smog inspections. South Dakota has neither. South Dakota has very low vehicle and healthcare insurance rates. South Dakota welcomes traveling residents. For example, I had a theft with all my personal identification and credit cards stolen. The South Dakota DMV bent the rules to send me a replacement drivers license with minimal documentation. I even got a temporary license by email the same day. BTW, the theft occurred when I was traveling in Oregon. The Portland police had no interest. They even recovered most of the stolen items but never bothered to notify me. When I finally found out a month later I was hundreds of miles away.

Oregon prides itself on being weird and is known as the place where young people go to retire. I would rather deal with people in another State who are more functional and grounded in reality.

Golden has it correct I think and on top of that you have to consider what this move will do to your Car insurance rates.

Out of the 50 states Oregon is number 26 in the highest car insuranc rates. South Dakota is number 32...well down the list and cheaper.

My insurance rates were cut in Half when I "moved" to SD.

Also Oregon, to make up for it's lack of a state income tax has quite high auto registration fees, being a rather anti-car state doesnt help.

I just bought a brand new Dodge 4x4 Diesel 2500 in Oregon and the registration and fees would have been more than twice the cost of my SD plates.

I'd think through this carefully if I were you.

Oregon plates can be kinda expensive the first year. They also frown on very expensive RV's with several at the same address.

Oregon has a per foot charge the first time it is registered in OR. Mine is 31' long, and I forget how much it cost, but something like $300. The plates are two years for much less. You should probably call and tell them your RV has a GVWR of 54,000 or whatever, and see if it is extra expensive because of the weight. I have a shuttle van, and it is $575 a year because it has a 14,500 GVWR, but by changing the licensed weight maximum to only 10,000 pounds, it went down to what passenger cars pay, $126 per two years. Much less than the commercial truck fees!
