Howdy everyone

So I will be moving from Washington State to Virginia because Uncle Sam says it's time to go and I was wondering if I can use my concealed carry permit I received in washington to keep it tucked on or near me or to be on the safe side get a permit for every state in between? I fulltime here on post and will be continuing the lifestyle once I hit my next duty station. What do you all do? Do you carry while on the road? What permits do you have so that you do not violate any laws?

Thanks for your input.

I have carry permits for Florida, Utah, New York, and Pennsylvania. These permits and associated reciprocity allow me to carry in 34 states +/- at any given time. I carry where legal and transport where not legal to carry. The onus of responsibility lies with us as responsible gun owners to know and follow the weapons laws at all times. I now regularly transport my self-defense handgun with me even when traveling by air. Once you get used to the processes and procedures of each state you visit, it becomes a much simpler endeavor. Do your research, follow the rules, and you'll never have a problem.
May the Mods grant me the serenity to accept the opinions of those I cannot change,

Having firearms IN your trailer while you travel or camp is not an issue. The practicality of getting a non-resident permit in every state you'll travel is near impossible, and as others have pointed out most non-resident permits are not recognized in other states than the one issuing anyway. I'd enjoy the travel, be aware of your surroundings and enjoy the PCS travel time. You may want to get a VA CHL when you arrive as their recognized in a lot more states. Safe travels - and thanks for your service!

Not wanting to start an argument BUT - with a Mastiff and a Shepherd on board I would ship the firearm to myself in VA and quit worrying about the Rv trip across!!

I am from Washington and realize I have limited reciprocity. Both DW and I have concealed carry permits. Without starting the whole "better to beg for forgiveness..." argument, We figure if we ever have to use a firearm everything else becomes a secondary problem/issue.

I've always heard NJ was bad state for anything reciprocity...

Truckers really love NJ....

Your CAC card will go along way in your travels... Respect the Police Officers... They only doing their jobs and getting a bad rap these days especially around firearms...

Ditto what all have told you. I looked and Washington is very limited on reciprocity. I have a similar problem as we'll be in the NE this year and we plan to be on the west coast next year. My Texas permit is not honored in some of the states. I do not carry where not legally permitted.

I use an app called CCW that allows you to check state reciprocity, but also links to the specific laws for each, shows local ranges and gun shops, etc. and is updated constantly. It's worked well for me.

In terms of carrying on the road, yes. I go where my permit is valid. The Utah permit gives me the ability to carry in a good portion of the USA.

Be aware that some states will only recognize a permit held by a resident of the State of issue. For example, my Utah permit is recognized by Colorado and Florida, but only because I'm a Utah resident. If I'm from Washington and have a Utah permit, the Utah permit won't be recognized. Florida and Colorado won't recognize a Washington permit.

Download the Legal Heat application to your smartphone, and check the WA state Reciprocity and Recognition. On a rough glance, it looks like you could get almost all the way there going a very indirect path.

Always remember that when it comes to Reciprocity and Recognition, you are subject to laws of whatever local jurisdiction you happen to be in.

Reciprocity involves a formal agreement between two states, versus Recognition which does not involve a formal agreement.

Research states you will pass thru for recep with WA. If they all do, no problem, if not, follow the state(s) requirements for weapons.
