Washer/dryer

The wife and I are cautiously looking for our full time rig. One option that we keep going back and forth on is the washer and dryer. For those of you that have one; is it worth it? Is it that much more convenient than taking the load to the laundromat? How many issues are there with having one in the rig?

We didn't have one during our full-timing years. We preferred to do two-weeks of laundry in 1-1/2 hours rather than little dabs daily. We also stayed in public parks the majority of time or boondocked so wouldn't be able to use it then. We never found public laundramats to be dirty.

I thought I would miss the closet space, but once we hit the road, we are wearing far fewer clothes than anticipated. When I did the house/ rv transition, I donated about half the clothes we had. Since we have been on the road, I have purged clothing a couple more times.

If you have the space, get a separate w/d. If you do not have the space, be sure to get a vented combo.

We had the Splendide combo unit in out previous coach and now have a Splendide Ariston stackable set in this one. MUCH prefer the stackables! Gets laundry done so much easier and quicker. Wouldn't have an RV without one.

Of course to use it, you really do need a FHU site, so make sure that's in your strategy.

Not FT just yet, but have an all in one washer dryer since 2003 = love it for doing small item loads when we've been in CGs on FHU. Don't like that it creases everything so have to iron EVERYTHING, and that it doesn't hold much at all. We boondock a lot so we tend to have it going full steam on odd occasions we go into FHUs for dumping, replenishing tanks etc, and if just going to a dump station option will then find a laundromat to do couple of loads at once.

If you are going to be in CG's or with FHU's the majority of the time, I feel definitely worth having as it is your FT home, and I would go with a stacked washer dryer separate units not the all in one teeny load version. If you tend to dry camp/wild camp/boondock etc, then probably wouldn't bother, albeit we've come across some nasty things in an odd laundromat machine here and there during our years, but generally that's very rare.

Are they perfect? Far from it! Is it worth the cost? Depends on how much your time is worth!
With a combo unit you can start a load in the morning and leave. When you return take dry clothes out and put them away. The key is small and often. Heck I am not bothered running a load a day if need be. Usually we do two loads about every three or four days.

Folks have different opinions on this -- nobody can tell you what YOU should do.

We had a Splendide combo. Rarely used it. We prefer to do all the laundry at once, rather than a little bit at a time. So we would go to a laundromat and do everything. The vast majority are very clean.

Do you use a washer and dryer at home? I would not want to be without it.

Another yes vote. We have the Splendide Ariston stackable set in our MH. It takes longer than a conventional (home) laundry machines, but that's okay with me.

No more hunting for a clean laundromat and no more "mystery lint"!

Our 96 Southwind has a W/D. Our next RV will also have one.
You definitely want a vented dryer.

We have a Kenmore stackable washer and dryer. We love it. Not fulltime but we never bring the towels, under ware and socks back in the house, we wash them before we break camp. nice

I'd like to add a question to the OP's question: Are you all using RV-specific laundry machines or just compact household models?

I vote for yes, get a washer/dryer!!!!! Yes, it is worth it!!

Lot of people talk about they would rather stay in their RV over a motel room, but yet would rather have the storage in an RV over a washer/dryer. You really don't know what someone has washed or dried in a laundry mat or RV Park washer/dryer. Kind of like sleeping in a motel bed to me.

Have had ours for almost eleven years. Did have a problem with the washer several years ago and had some parts replaced. Was a pain being without it.

We don't full time and it was a non-negotiable item for the wife. I thought it was a waste of money but I now will not be without them. Ours are separate units, Whirlpool.
