2010 Jeep liberty Toad option

I am at it again. Many of you chimed in about my search for a 4 down toad a while ago and that was very helpful. However we still have not found "the vehicle" Looked at many many Wranglers. At the end of it all while we liked the wrangler we just thought they were way overpriced for what you get and it didn't seem ideal as a daily driver. Add the inability for DW's mom to get in it for appointments and such and it just wasn't practical. Don't get me wrong, we loved it. Still milling about the CRV which is a respectable toad but frankly we aren't in love with it. Fits the bill for our range, usability, makes for a good trade from our Civic but we just don't love the CRV. While looking around DW stumbled on a 2010 Jeep Liberty Sport 4wd with 60k miles for $15k. I know very little about this vehicle. I know it can be towed 4 down. It's a 6cyl and seems to be well taken care of. I know it's a bit piggish at a about 4k lbs, over the CRV which is closer to 3k. NADA has clean retail at $16k. Planning to go look at tomorrow. Any thoughts?

OP - another thought. Perhaps getting a sturdy little step like RVers use (look at Camping World), that would make it easier to get into. You will use the vehicle much more than having her in the vehicle so why not get what's good for you and improvise?

Definitely different strokes..... 🙂

Good luck in the search.

Just for clarification, was it a CR-V? An Accord? A Civic? I'm not knocking Jeeps as I owned two Grand Cherokee's.

As my Dad is handicapped, height probably does make a difference as he used to be 5' 10" but now, 5' 5"...... age and arthritis will take it's toll.

WE tow an 08 Liberty setup just like the one you are considering. We have about as many miles on it towing as we do driving it.
They tow great. You don't even know it is behind you. Definitely
a nice vehicle.

We have a 04, have had since new. Has 60,000 on it now. The only problem has been the windows falling down, but fixed with after market parts and now no problem. Has been pulled a lot. Just a little heavy, for a gasser..

Effy! Sorry I wasn't around, it was nascar weekend at Chicagoland speedway, and we've been camping in the infield, haven't touched a computer since Thursday morning (DW says Go Brad!!)

Wife has a 2010 liberty, looks just like the one you posted. We bought it new, (47,000 trouble free miles, looking to need brakes and tires soon) and recently set it up to tow.

Used a blue ox baseplate, took me 4 hours to install it.

Pic 12 in the add clearly shows the transfer case selector, and this is the one that can be toad. There is a tiny button with a "N" next to it, in front of the selector knob. Push and hold with a ballpoint pen, light flashes 4 times and goes solid, tiny click, and done. take the key and hook er up.

I like the liberty (I like my wrangler TJ better---lol) It will hold 3 full sized humans and 3 full sized dogs easy. (wrangler won't) gets decent mileage (better than the wrangle TJ) and it's still a jeep, and will go places no Honda will ever see.

Hey Mark, Thanks for asking. It shows well, definitely a contender. The only caveat is that DW thinks it will be too difficult for her Mother and the others she cares for to get in and out. Sitting down is easy enough, but pulling the legs up and over is cumbersome enough in the civic. It may be too problematic in the Jeep. Sigh. Is what it is, despite our loathing for the civic we may need to suck it up until things change enough to open our options back up. Wasn't really happy with the trade value of he civic either but I can fight that fight if I need. So more contemplating. Need to get MIL over there to see how it works for her but that's not easy. She's in a physical rehab facility (fell and broke a vertebrae 2 weeks ago) now with limited ability to take her out and tis dealership is 30 miles away...Obviously we have some serious constraints with our choice of vehicle. I really like the Jeep and DW does too. Planets aren't aligning as we had hoped however.

Thanks for the input everyone. It's definitely a winner. If we miss this one at least we have better narrowed our choices. This is not an easy time for us nor a decision.

I was kind of in the same dilemma. My Dad is 93 and very arthritic. My brother, as I mentioned, has a Jeep Liberty. It is much easier for my Dad to get in and out the Honda CR-V as it sits a little lower than the Jeep. Also, the rear seat opening of the Jeep is very narrow compared to the Honda.

I also have a old Mercedes SL that sits very low, which is way too low for Dad to get up and out of that car. The Honda allows him to just slide/turn his bottom to set his legs out of the car. The height of the vehicle let's him just stand without putting a lot of pressure on his leg muscles to stand. If he is in my lower car, I have to practically lift him up myself (I have a bad back).

Just food for thought.

I was under the impression that there are 2 different transfer cases for the liberty, one was to be used only on wet, snowy, muddy etc as it would bind up on dry pavement- that's the command trac II part time 4wd with the MP 1522 transfer case. The other one can be left in 4wd all the time. I'm not sure if it as easy to set up for towing. Be sure and read the manual before you buy and check this out.
I have a 2010 Limited and it is a great toad. Wish mileage was better, but it will get me where I want to be-off road!

Last year I got the same model as the one you're looking at,but it was an '11 with 47K on it and they wanted $16K for it. I got it for $15k as it was a rental car return. I traded in my '06 Trailblazer as it was 4600#s and I was looking at about $3500 in repairs. I do like the Liberty, except for the fact that it is the base model, only gets 12-13 mpg around town and has an engine stumble that we can't seem to get rid of.I can't understand how a vehicle that weighs 3600# with a 3.7L engine only gets 12-13 mpg when the Trailblazer got 13-15 mpg an weighs in at 4600#. Heck, even my '94 Cherokee sport got 15-17 city and was heavier, but the 4L was a better engine.
I'm thinking that for the '10 base model with 60K,you're looking at about $13,500-14,000 even with the hitch and make sure it has the towing package 'cuz mine had an aftermarket hitch and no package.

I have pulled a Jeep Liberty since 2001 and have had no problems at all with it. Would not let it go unless I quit traveling.

I purchased my older son a 03 Liberty that I just sold last week. He had it for seven years and not one problem and he took it off road all over Ct. and were he went to school in Vt. He was also a snowboard instructor at Killington mountain so drove in some pretty nasty weather and road conditions. I also purchased my younger son a 2008 Liberty in 2010 it had 80,000 miles on it and was/ is in awesome shape I picked up the 08 for 13k. I have a Wrangler that I use just to plow with and for a toad. Actually all three have never been to the dealer or needed repair.
This is a pic of the 03 the day it left the house.

Same color as my 2002 Liberty. Keep an eye on the auto tranny pan. Mine rusted thru from the outside in!!??? It was an easy change out but Im glad it didnt happen out on the freeway somewhere

Effy, I totally understand your situation. If you don't 'feel' it, I've been their too with cars. I hope the Liberty you are going to look at today is as nice as it looks on the link.

Good luck,
