Campground Opinion

As usual when I have question, I turn to you guys (this forum).

We live in Houston, Texas and plan a week long trip (stay) in Asheville, NC to visit the Biltmore and surrounding area. We have located, from the web, this campground "ASHEVILLE BEAR CREEK RV PARK". It is a long drive from Houston to Asheville, NC only to be disappointed in our "home" for a week.

My question is: Have any of you stayed there or know anything about this park and can give me an opinion/review of this park? We have a 42ft coach.

Or do you know of a better place there in Asheville? This is our first trip to North Carolina and want it to be memorable.

Thank you for your help.

We have stayed at Bear Creek and weren't impressed. Sites are very tight and difficult to get into. Also had the problem with the laundry wait times. We also stayed at Mama Gerties and although a beautiful park, it sits on a steep hill (sites are level) and walking around the park is not feasible for people like us with bad knees. Had to take the toad to the office where showers were located at the bottom of the hill. Due to the hill, getting into our site we scraped bottom and tore off our mud flap and we only have a 33' RV. They do have new sites on the top of the mountain that look awesome. We prefer the KOA in Swannanoa. Not fancy but easier to get in. We got a back in site facing the creek and with nobody in the sites on the creek we had a nice view. Some road noise.

You guys are all making me drewl! I'm so envious! I use to live just off highway 64 coming out of Morganton, NC in 1979-1980. Only a skip to Ashville. I loved living in the foot hills. Got to visit all those great spots. Had a motorcycle then and would travel up some pretty rugged mountains. Absolutely wonderful country! But ... time and destiny led me to another direction. No regrets, but really precious memories!

While you are in Ashville take a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mt. Mitchell is a beautiful view.

Stayed there 2 years ago. Larger class A rigs are not actually "in" the park. You will be down at the sites right on the road waiting for a car to speed around the bend and leave the road and crash into the RV's. Terrible experience. Owner was not very nice when questioned about these "dangerous" sites. Told us to "leave if you don't like it". Not a very good or friendly mountain experience. Not nearly as nice as the Good Sam rating. After our trip I called Good Sam and explained the issues at this park. All I got was defensive B.S.

Considering that there several other CGs in the area with much higher user ratings you have a lot to consider. Personaly we generally don't go anywhere that has less than a 7 rating.

Might be. Probably isn't. It's not hard to "read between the lines" on that site, especially when there are more than 2 reviews. I've found RVpark Reviews to paint a pretty accurate "picture" of what CGs are really like. Moreover you can look at the reviewer's other reviews to see if they are just haters or have a balanced view of the world.

Not so much. Rated by one reviewer that may have only stayed one night, and you have no idea how old the last inspection was. Same goes for Woodall ratings. We've looked at several parks that these guides gave top ratings to and RVPark Reviews had low ratings. Just driving though a couple told us that RV Park reviews was spot on.

We stayed there a few years ago. It was a very clean, well maintained park. Easy access to the interstate made for convenient travel to the sights in the area. We had no issues with the site size or access to the park,at that time we were in a 37 ft MH pulling a car. Due to the proximity of the highways, you do get some traffic noise, but not too bad.

I've stayed at Bear Creek only because Mama Gerties was full...Bear creek is kept well, but the larger pull thru's are kind of close to the road which has a unique curve...if you have dogs that like to run I'd be a bit uncomfortable at Bear Creek, Mr Mark gave you some nice places and Mama Gerties is definitely good..You will love Asheville and the Biltmore and the eclectic restaurants and shops..and for me, there's a pinball museum.:)

I cannot help you with that campground, but I use rvparkreviews all the time. Yes, there can be reviews that conflict but if you read the reviews, you will pretty much know if the campground will work for you. I submit reviews for every campground I go to with the hope that my experience will help others.

Stayed at Bear Creek in September....yes there are hills (you are in the mountains!), but the sites are level and the folks who operate the campground are very friendly and make you feel very welcome there.

It is very close to the Biltmore House and access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Also close to downtown where there are some excellent restaurants.

When at Biltmore, I highly recommend the rooftop tour where you will learn quite a bit about the house and it's owners. Also take a drive over to the winery for a free tasting!

Stayed there last October, Its OK. The spots out by the main road aren't so great. The others are tight but seem nice. We moved over to ma ma gerties the last part of the trip. Awesome

I don't know when you are planning on going to Asheville nor if you have dogs. Four Paws Kingdom is where we stay every year. It is a short drive to Asheville, Chimney Rock, The Cove, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is big rig friendly and very easy to get too. It is clean and well kept. I don't think it reopens until March. I suggest checking the website.

Becker, we have been going to Asheville almost every year since 2009 staying in the motorhome some and also at the Biltmore Hotel. We have started making it a yearly adventure.

Our first RV trip in 2009, we stayed at the Rutledge Lake RV Park in Fletcher, which was nice at the time, not sure of the condition now. In 2014, we stayed at Campfire Lodgings which is excellent. Since Campfire Lodging was full this past year, in 2015 we stayed at the KOA in Candler which was also very nice and near the interstate. We may very well stay at the KOA this year when we go in August/September. I really liked the location.

I wish the Biltmore would build a nice RV park on their property. They have just added a new hotel near the winery which will be opening very soon.

The long steep drive to Campfire Lodging is a little tight but doable. Once on top of the ridge, it is absolutely beautiful. We were in our Dynasty at the time.

Good luck, the Biltmore is an amazing place.

Well....we've been to North Carolina one time and stayed one night. It just so happens we stayed at that park. It's on a hill and kind of a weird drive up into the campground, but no access issues. We were on the main loop which had sights on both sides of the road, climbing a hill. We stayed there in a 36' DP and had a nice sight.

We had intended to do our laundry while their, but it was a 2-3 hour wait to get a machine. Seemed like a common problem. We went into town and did laundry at a laundromat. Other than the laundry issue, it was a nice park.
