Can U Flat tow 2006-2008 Toyota Tacoma 4x4?

I am looking to start building another project. I am thinking about a 2006-2008 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. I would hope to flat tow it. Does anybody know if it can be flat towed?

I realize the first response will be to read the manual. I am only shopping for the truck at this point, so I don't have a manual to read!

Thanks for your input.

I disconnect the driveshaft and tie wire it up. Only takes a few minutes and a wrench or ratchet and socket.

exactly where did I say that there was a drive shaft disconnect involved?
the problem is that people buy stuff that can't/shouldn't be towed 4 down and then try to do it because somebody on the internet said it was fine to do so.
incidentally I had a drive shaft disconnect on my S10 PU and hated it.
but yes, manufacturer's will go out of their way to disallow claims if at all possible.

All Tacoma models are pretty much the same from 2005 to 2016, but it may vary between 4 and 6 cylinder/2wd vs 4wd/automatic vs manual transmission. I remember a coworker who had a 2008 or so automatic 4wd and he had to use a Remco disconnect.

My experience is that the manual will say no, if it addresses the topic at all. But, that is just a CYA position taken by Toyota.

But, a good idea to get eyes on a manual!

whether it is a CYA position or a common sense one, anybody who defies that warning in the OM deserves what he/she gets, IMHO. Instead of heeding the manual, just follow the advice of anonymous forum folks and go ahead and do it. :s

I have a 2014 Tacoma 4x4 auto trans. It can not be towed 4 down as it stands. I bought an older Suzuki Vitara, 4x4 auto transmission. The transfer case has a neutral, so I tow it 4 down in park with trans case in neutral. You have to start the engine every 200 or so miles. This car is only used as a toad, and serves the purpose quite well.

Just to be very clear. If you have a 4x4 vehicle with a two speed transfer case with a neutral position vs an all wheel drive vehicle with a single speed transfer case you can put the transfer case into neutral. This completely disconnects the wheels from the transmission. In most cases this will allow the vehicle to be flat towed. The transfer case is in neutral and the automate transmission in park. Keep in mind if the vehicle has a steering lock then the vehicle may need to have the ignition in a position that unlocks the steering. You don't need lube pumps or driveline disconnects etc.

Thanks for all the advice. I would really like an auto. I have never had an auto as a toad. Only a 5 speed. With the manual trans, just put the tranny in neutral and the transfer case in neutral and go. Make sure steering is unlocked.

Not sure if an auto can be towed in neutral. I am struggling to find anything official from Toyota. My buddy had an FJ Cruiser. He used a tow dolly and disconnect the rear driveshaft. Pain in the a$$ that was. I am hoping to flat tow by just tranny and transfer case in neutral.

I will keep researching.

If it has unlocking front hubs, you can disconnect the rear driveshaft and tow it.

So far my 04 manual 4x4 Tacoma is doing well. Toyota isn't gonna say it's ok. I'm able to put the transfer case into neutral . Not sure if the newer ones have a similar arrangement.

The Corolla and Yaris with manual transmissions are both flat towable, with no speed or distance restrictions. The only requirement is to idle the engine for three minutes before driving. I have been towing a 2010 Corolla five speed manual for six years with no problems.

The Auto trans tows very well with a driveshaft disconnect. We towed a 2005 and it was great. No Toyota product has anything in the manual that approves towing. I think Nissan , most Mazdas and Subarus are the same.
