Cheasapeake Bay Bridge tunnel

Hi all,
Was thinking about a vacation in Ocean City Md, than heading to Williamsburg Va. Anyone ever use the bridge tunnel for there trip
? Driving a 36 ft class A and a CRV toad.

As you are coming in to each tunnel, the road sort of jogs to the left or right and the road narrows as you go in to the tunnel. Just be aware of your position in the lane and it is not problem.

Live in the area an use the tunnel often. Two axle coach with a CRV will run you $31 in tolls. Keep the CRV connected. Will actually cost you a few dollars more to disconnect and drive separately. EZ Pass will pay it if you have one in the coach. Be sure to remove the EZ Pass in the CRV and wrap in foil or you could be double charged. Use the far right lane as mentioned as they will ask about propane. Never had them verify, yet.

When you head out of Norfolk towards Williamsburg on I64 the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel also has an inspection stop before the bridge and they will verify the valve is closed. Miss the inspection and they will stop all traffic and pull you out to inspect. Same with I664 if you choose to loop around Norfolk.

Much better drive down US13 than heading east on US50 thru Annapolis which is your alternative. South on US301 out of Annapolis has a toll bridge over the Potomac River. One lane in each direction for about 2 miles. Much worse than the two tunnels.

We use it frequently. Going south, there is a rest area just north of the tolls, pull in there and turn off your propane. There is plenty of parking and you can sit and relax if you care to do so.

The tunnels are only two lanes, 1 in each direction and your mirrors can pass pretty close to oncoming trucks or other RVs. If you have a problem with that, find another route or go through during lite traffic times.

I have gone thru at all different times with no problem, but lately we have set our schedule so that we arrive at the rest area around 8 or 9 PM, catch a nap and go through the tunnel about 3 or 4 in the morning. This works well for me because we continue to Emporia and this time table allows me to miss all the traffic around Virginia Beach and the Norfolk area.

I enjoy the ride going south from Jersey, I find 13 a lot more relaxing then I-95 around Washington and Baltimore.

Yep, no problem if the propane is off. Try to use the right most toll booth as it is wider than the ones to the left of it. We've used both and find that we have less than 1" on both mirrors when using other than the right booths. Just go VERY slow. A nice ride, but if the wind comes up they will close the route to trucks and RV's.

We have done it many times. You will need to pull over at a small booth before entering the tunnel to show that your propane is off. They will make note of your tag number. Enjoy

yep...tunnels are a little scary if you get a tractor trailer coming the other way but it was not that bad. My son liked watching all the fishermen on the water.
