Could 10 year tires really be safe?

Hi all. We have a MH with tires that are original. Manufactured in 2005 (the tires). We have taken it to get new tires now twice at the local truck/tire center and while I'm sure they would have loved to sell us tires, they keep inspecting them and telling us that they look great. The RV is stored indoors, level and is only used a couple of times per year. So, no sun/ozone on them nor extreme temps. We don't see any cracks or bulges in the sidewalls but since we are taking it to Florida in a month, I don't want to be completely stupid. Could they be ok? Thanks.

Trish, to honestly answer your question yes or no your tires need to be broken down off the rim. By breaking them down off the rim your tires can be inspected for inside sidewall damage. Inside sidewall damage is the cause of many blowouts. After your tire expert inspects your tires he or she can make a intelligent decision. I've run tires on my RV with 10 years 2 different times by using this method.

Maybe when people make statements like this, THEY should do research and find out HOW MUCH a Tire company will charge to break down 6 or 8 tires just to inspect. Then reinstall and balance. That may make a big difference in the decision if they are spending hundreds of dollars just to inspect. Also, I doubt ANY Tire Company or expert would state that those 7 year or older tires are SAFE to reinstall and go down the road. They would not be stupid enough to incur the liability of stating those tires are still good. EVEN if they made you sign a liability waiver, the lawyers would still hang them out to dry if something bad happened. Doug

This one sums it up about as good as any post can.

Is the few $$$ saved really worth it?

One more year amounts to saving roughly 10%. Lets say up spend $4000 on a set of tires, is it worth a $400 chance? Not to me.
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

We had the four rears changed out a couple weeks ago. They were GY670s, 13 years old.
They looked perfect except a bit of shoulder wear on one. they were soft and supple and hand no cracks or crazing or anything.
Looked on the inside, after they were dismounted, and looked perfect.
We store ours inside too.
I got the feeling of being a sucker and tires could have gone another decade.
Our Mhs don't , or most much over 30,00 lbs and the tires generally are designed for the punishment of 80,000 lbs+ semi rigs.
Pur tires never got hot. The one inside tire near exhaust ran about ten degrees warmer than the others. In Az in over one hundred degree heat the ties never got over 125 region.
Would they actually last another decade: maybe/perhaps/probably/maybe not.
I don't know. I don't think they would sell many tires if they would self destruct when they got to five years/ten years/or thirteen years old.
Michelin Dealer Salesman said the Michelins are guaranteed for 7 years but ht Mgr chimed in that tires have no set life span. Even with checks etc the tires may be good for a long time. Depends on their review apparently.
If I had sturdy wheel cans, which coaches should have but most don't, I would have made the choice to keep the old tires on a lot longer.
Dollars to donuts I bet some semi driver got some free tires or some farmer did and the GY670s will be rolling for some time to come.
They can't sell them if over 5 years old. I do know the two taken off the steer axle three years ago are running around on anot for hire rig in Indiana. They are 13 years old, now, too.
I made the safest choice based on current opinions.
Perhaps there is some outfit that can look at the tires with instruments,x ray,gas chromagraphs, molecula makeup or some such and say safe r unsafe.
I bet there is some such equipment as Tire Companies, would be foolish to produce questionable tires or tires they don't know how long they will function, for the purposes sold for and the huge sums involved, in liability.
It is to their advantage to leave Customers guessing and gambling on the safe side and buying more tires. It is not to their advantage to produce tires that are a gamble however.
Of course they do it with rethreads, all the time, as do China bombs, and marginal, get the rigs out the door,as cheap as possible tires, of some towables, or did.
Analytically I believe I could have gotten a lot more usage out of the old tires, but like I said, I made the right decision based on opinions,in the absence of a knowledgeable analysis, of the tire structure and materials in current state.

Thanks all. That seems to be my opinion but my husband is like, 'They're fine". Well, he's not the one driving down to Florida. I will be and for my stress level alone, I think it's best to replace. So, now that that's settled. (haha) what do you all recommend?

Shop for tires, get some prices including mounting and balancing, an out the door price. Then Join the Family Motor Coach Assn, and take advantge of their Michelin Advantage tire deal, which is said by many to save a hundred bucks a tire or more.

I am not a member, never have bought tires thru this program, but have heard so much about this, that it must be a good deal.

Good tires are your first defense against a blowout. I like feeling safe and ten year old tires would not make me feel that way. Seven years is the age at which most say tires should be replaced. You have gotten three extra years. Quit while you are ahead and get new tires. Please.

I'm surprised that you have not heard that you are three years past due on replacing as most do so by 7 years. I went 7 years on my front tires and 10 on the rear, BUT I put almost all of the miles on them and used them often and never hit a curb or anything in the road... lucky. I might replace the fronts and take a good look at the removed tires... no cracks even between the tread ribs. If so then take a good look at the rear tires BUT you are risking damage to the MH that will be more than a set of new tires.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Tires should be replaced if 7 years or older. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT.
IF you purchase Tire/Wheel ESC protection, guess what? IF your tires are older than 7 years, that protection will not pay for any tire problems as they will state, the tires are too old for proper usage. That is in the small fine print:B They state they are not in business to replace old marginal tires regardless of the Tread left on them. I replace my 1975 Corvette tires every 5 to 7 years, even tho the Car has only 29,000 miles on it. Having a blow out while hot rodding around and the possible damage to the car body is not worth the risk for me. Doug

below is from a Tire Rack seller website. This is for just CAR tires that do not have the stress that RV tires would have.

While American driving conditions don't include the high-speed challenges of the German Autobahn, Chrysler, Ford Motor Company and General Motors have joined their European colleagues by recommending that tires installed as Original Equipment be replaced after six years of service.
