Not true, I'm the one that suggested it. I have been going that way for over 40 years but obviously from reading other posts, there are other ways that other folks prefer. I grew up in the area and got my first pony from Shipshewana. I see things along that route that remind me of growing up in the area. I'm sure there are faster routes.

What Teacher's Pet said. My experience is that going through Goshen is usually a pain, whether following Indiana-15 or US-33. It is a busy college town and market center, RV manufacturing center, and popular tourist destination. All the traffic runs through the busiest city streets.

My first time through, late on a Friday afternoon, was a disaster. I was expecting the city to be much smaller, did not expect so many miles and minutes creeping from light to light in city traffic. I tried it again recently, coming through in the opposite direction about 10 AM, and while things moved a little better, it wasn't that much better. Goshen is not one of those small towns that holds you up for a few minutes, it is a small city and you work your way through slowly.

If someone has suggested US-33, they've probably not actually done it.

Maybryoso1,

Thanks for the info.

We are having repairs on our coach in Elkhart. Does anyone know if you can walk in for a day rate charge?

We're fulltimer's raised in the Elkhart County area. We're here now at Elkhart Campground, spend part of each summer here visiting family. Not signed up for the rally though, due to the many tempting things to eat with my extremely low sodium diet. Scottiemom doesn't want me to end up in the ER again, looking like the Pillsbury Doughboy.

This is a route that I would recommend for a novice to the area with an RV, it avoids most narrow roads and towns. For example: US33 is somewhat narrow with small shoulders and crooked from 10 miles north of FT Wayne to US6 and a real pain in Goshen Indiana between 2:30PM and 5:30PM due to plants changing shifts, causing sometimes a 1/2 mile plus back up on the east side of town.

The US20 bypass can also be used to avoid the Toll Road @ South Bend, but that entails driving East to CR17N to CR6W to CR9N to CR4E, driving about 8 miles further with 8-10 stop lights. Again it can have heavy traffic traffic in the mornings and between 2:30 and 5:30 in the afternoon, especially if you hit a train between US20 and CR6.

You would need to check construction on the given route. I know that US31 has some construction for about 6-7 miles north of I-465 @ Indianapolis, been that way a few times this summer for doctor's appointments.

Here's my route.

  • I-75N
  • I-275W (Northern Kentucky south of Cincinnati)
  • I-74W
  • I-465N @ Indianapolis
  • US-31N to US20W/US31N/US33N @ South Bend to west side
  • Indiana Toll Road I-80/I90E to Exit 92
  • N (right)on IN-19 to 1st stop light @ CR4 turn East (Right)
  • Straight ahead at 4 way stop, on right just after Total Value Rv Sales.

Safe travels.

AVOID I-75 THRU Cincinnati, Take I-275 west to I 74 west towards Indy or I-275 to North of Cincinnati. Are you going to Elkhart or Goshen? Just dropped our rig off at ESS two weeks ago and US-31 is an easy drive to Ind 20 and then Ind 19.

What Snowman said, unless you want to totally avoid the Cincinnati area. To do that, take I-64 west out of Lexington to Louisville, then I-65 north to Indianapolis to get to US-31. But Louisville can be an even bigger mess than Cincy at the wrong time of day, and I-65 was pretty rough the last time I used it a few years ago.

Taking I-75 all the way up to Maumee to get on the Ohio Turnpike adds almost 100 miles to the trip.

Essentially: I-75N to I-74W to US31N
There will be bypass routes around the cities on that routing.
Currently RV-less but not done yet.
