Do you rent out your coach?

whelp...we signed on the dotted line and will take delivery of our very first class A motor home sometime next week. As I was sharing our good news with a co-worker, she said "Would you ever consider renting it out? If so, put us first on the list". Frankly, the thought of renting it out never crossed my mind, but the prospect of someone else helping "pay" for it is attractive!

My co-worker is also a good friend, who I trust would treat our property as if it were hers. So question to the group-do you have any experiences, good or bad, in renting your vehicle?

My nephew, who is on the wild side, called me one day and asked if he could take my DP to Mammoth (in the snow) with his five buddies to go skiing. He can't understand why I'm still laughing about it 5 years later.

I don't even let my daughters or son-in-laws move it or operate any of the appliances or mechanisms. They know....not even to ask!

My insurance requires listing drivers in the policy. I am sure if you rented it that would not cover any damage as this would be a business vs. pleasure, but check your insurance for the real facts.

I can answer the insurance question. If you are renting it out, you would be operating a business and would need the appropriate business licenses and business liability insurance (not cheap). If you have a personal policy on the motorhome but are indeed renting it, there is no coverage for business use. Coverage would come under the proper business insurance. You would pay too much for licensing and insurance to rent it out casually to only friends. You would need to rent it on a regular basis to make money and then spend it for repairs and upgrades because of wear and tear. No, we won't even loan ours to anyone.

Quickest way I know to lose a good friend!
That's before you get to the insurance issues and whether your warranty would cover failures while rented.
Loaned (not rented) a boat to a friend once - never again!
Came back with a busted prop, an empty gas tank and what I think was sticky Coke residue splashed all over the inside.
Not so much as a "sorry"!
Needless to say our friendship ended right there

Met a fellow camper who was using his brother's camper while on a remote work site. He told me he thought it would be easier than getting his out of storage and his brother insisted on him taking the camper. Well when he got to the work site and was setting up he found out why. The holding tanks were full, the hot water heater had a leak, the refer didn't work. Seems that his brother thought if he loaned it out when it came back all those things would be fixed. Sure 'nuff, the poor guy was working on fixing the camper when he wasn't working in regular job - he had to so he could take a shower, store food and use the facilities! But he did tell me it was the last time he'd borrow the damn thing.

Comes up here often ...the consensus is no way. If something is gonna get broke I'm gonna do it, not some wannabe Rver. Tell them to rent one from Cruise America, they are in that business and sell the over-abused RVs at 120K miles.

One of our sons has used our Class A - with only positive results. The other son: Don't think it would be a good idea. He's not one to sweat the details and has an impatient personality. Would NEVER rent it out. Just too different for those who have no experience at RVing and there is too much of "us" in it to risk the loss.

Depends on the coach. Class C simple ones or Class a simple ones, maybe, if I needed the money or really liked the people. More complex coaches like diesel pushers, absolutely not unless they are an experienced bus driver.

No. Check with your insurance company if you do give this a second thought!!!

I let a good friend borrow my previous coach, needless to say he backed into a 'parked' minivan with a person sitting in the driver seat. To make a long story short, my RV insurance company had to pay all of the damages (to the minivan and repair of my coach). I was about 30 miles away during this incident. :M

Strangely enough, I called my insurance agent prior to this event. If I let my friend 'borrow' the coach, it was covered. If he 'rented' it, my insurance company wouldn't cover any of the damages. :E
