We were given a quote of $4500 for a 60-month extended warranty through Good Sams on a used 2017 class c motorhome we're purchasing. The deductible is $100, or $50 if we use Camping World. Does this sound reasonable, or should we try to negotiate a lower price? Unfortunately, the manufacturer's warranty doesn't transfer to us from the original owner.

Yes, there are very good reasons for not getting one, but some people say RVs aren't made as well now.

The first price wasn't a mistake, it was an idiot test to see if you actually qualify for idiot status. The next price is also a test to see if the first one was accurate. Take the advice and self insure.

Your answers make it seem to me that you have sold yourself on the warranty. So just get it.

The Jayco 2-year warranty on the unit doesn't transfer to new owner, even if it's a 2017. So we will have to buy service contract if we want coverage. I know dealers make a lot on these, and it's probably not wise moneywise to buy one. But there's a lot of electronics and power features--power awning, leveling jacks, etc. that can go wrong. And we are not that handy!

Well respected consumer report magazine says "73% of extended warranties are never used".

You get out on the road and have a failure then good luck finding someone to repair. $4500 is a huge amount, bank that and self -insure,you will be way ahead. Find a local mechanic or mobile RV repairman to do things that may be needed. There are some of the "what if's" out there that feel the need to insure against just about anything, makes me chuckle.
Follow recommended maintenance procedures using quality products, especially engine oil. I use Mobil 1 from Costco and Wix or NAPA filters. Motorcraft also. Use a fuel stabilizer in your gas tank, especially if it is going to be stored and run your generator when the additive is in your tank.
For me, the extended warranty program is one big money maker and borders a scam. As stated read and understand WHAT they will pay and what they Won't pay before you purchase.
If the impression is that every squeak and rattle will be repaired and every broken door latch etc, sorry.

Today's engines are not your father's engines. My vehicles have all gone over 200K without major issues, my step-son's just turned 300K on his pick-up.

Extended warranty packages kick in after manufacturer warranties on the chassis and housebox appliances, etc., run out. The policy documents are full of loopholes and exclusions and require you to keep complete records of appliance manufacturer recommended periodic inspections and servicing.

Save $4500 in a bank account for unexpected repairs after original warranties run out. What does this warranty scam tell you about most RV dealers?

rule #1 never ever beleave what a sales person says.#2 everything in writing. #3 the only figure that matters is the out the door price. watch out they,ll be trying to add fee,s on.

And they also told you the wrong price on the rig which they claimed was an accident. How many accidents are to many.
The salesman knows exactly what he is doing each step of the way.
Have you gone to the Good Sam extended warranty website and gotten a quote there? Might be interesting.

At first they quoted $9000 for the policy. We said no. Now, they've come back with this offer of $4500. Said the first offer was a "mistake" and the wrong info. was accidentally put into computer.

Extended warranties are nothing but a scam, don't waste your money. As noted bank {actually do it}, that $4,500 and stay on top of preventative maintenance and you will be fine.

I would not consider such a warranty. First, the odds are not in your favor. These extended warranty companies know what fails and when, as well as how much it costs to repair. Deducting the 30% plus profit margin for the seller out of the costs plus another 30% profit margin for the warranty company itself, that tells you they expect to pay out on average only $1800 on your $4500 investment.

In addition, many of those extended warranty companies have a business model that is so full of exclusions and loopholes, that getting them to pay is difficult. Read the actual policy, not the sales brochure.

Buy a one year policy to cover any infant failures and then cancel the policy and self insure with the rest of your money. Take the rv out a lot in that year to exercise all systems well and force any infant failures.

I bought one and am going to war with them over a claim they absolutely should honor, but are denying. Just so you know.....

I agree with Pauldub, these guys make up the profit they loose from discounting RVs with these plans. You can do a lot of repairs with $4500 plus deductables. They are notoriously profitable because they are hard to use and cover things that don't happen. Insure yourself.
