FRIEGHTLINER CHASSIS STEERING ISSUE

I HAVE A 2001 36 GEORGIE BOY LANDAU THAT HAS DEVELOPED STEERING PROBLEMS. AT SLOW SPEEDS, IT SEEMS SLUGISH, HARDER TO STEER. UNDERWAY NOT AS BAD. I'VE CHECKED THE BELTS ON THE CUMMINS B260 POWERPLANT & THEY ARE TIGHT. THINKING IT BELT SLIPAGE ON DRIVE PUMP. DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE AN INLINE FILTER OFF THE RESERVOIR EITHER.
ANY THOUGHTS OR COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED ON WHAT TO CHECK NEXT.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

It would really help to know exactly which Freightliner chassis you have.

For example, if you have a rear radiator, comments (valid comments) about hydraulically driven side radiator fans are not relevant. If you do have a side radiator, they are spot on!

If you have a hydraulic pump driven of your compressor to power steering and fan at side radiator.

Have this checked out before the pump fails, ASAP. after it fails and sends metal into the whole hydraulic system. you can cause thousands of dollars of damage.

Ask how I know.

Pogoil.

This has all the makings of the hydraulic pump on it's way out.

JUST CONTACTED FREIGHTLINER. VERY GOOD ABOUT ANSWERING PHONE, BUT NOT TOO HELPFUL. DID FIND OUT THAT THERE IS NOT A BELL CRANK ON THIS APPLICATION. TOLD ME TO REPLACE FLUID AND LOOK FOR METAL PARTS IN FLUID. THINKING PUMP BEGINING TO FAIL AT THIS POINT. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL INPUTS...

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP. I'VE MADE SURE RESERVOIR IS FULL. I'VE LUBED EVERYTHING UP FRONT THAT I COULD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE BELL CRANK. WILL CHECK THAT OUT TODAY. WHAT WOULD BE THE SYMPTOMS OF A PUMP GOING BAD?

i'm guessing, but it sounds like your pump is dying leaving you with less hydraulic power.

I agree with Wolfe10. Needs a good lube job. The bell crank? Why would the bell crank go bad all of a sudden?

Make sure your power steering fluid is full.

Yup, start by verifying that lubed parts of the front suspension are, indeed lubed.

That includes king-pins, bell crank, tie rod ends, etc.

Look into an after market bell crank.
