Hello everyone, happy to join the experts.
I am in the process of purchasing a 1999 Tioga 31 footer with 450 10 valve engine and I'm concerned about the gas mileage. Greatly appreciate feedback. Thanks.

Make more money. Don't worry.
So big a world, so little time to see.

12mpg without toad. With toad 10-11. If I ever got 7 mpg I'd sell it! :B

Over the past 35,000 miles I have averaged 8.3 MPG, 2003 vintage 6.8 V-10 moving a 30 foot Class C, usually loaded to about 13,000 pounds. Every mile, every tank of gas, logged.

You can probably make it a little better than that by driving very slowly, but you are not going to see much better than 10 MPG, even on that rare tank of gas when you got pushed by a 20 MPH tailwind. Current cost is 40-50 cents per mile to move the thing, just gas.

For the past few years, I've been resolving the gas cost issue by making short trips, nearest CG is 15 miles, favorite is less than 100.

But contemplating road trips, I need to weigh the desire of being in the motorhome against the cost of moving it. If I move 100-200 miles a day and stay a few nights to a week at each location, the motorhome economics are not too bad. However, if I need to move 300-600 miles a day, it is a whole lot cheaper to drive my 40 MPG car and spend $100-200 a night on hotel rooms and restaurant meals. If I choose to drive my 20 MPG truck, I can still be ahead with $100 motel stays.

So think about how you are going to use the motorhome, and decide whether your MPG concerns are valid. Economically, it really depends on how you will use it. If you think it is going to save you money traveling, that is questionable.

Beyond economics, it becomes a lifestyle issue. For me, a 4000 mile, two week, $3000 RV road trip has to be weighed against a two-week escorted tour, trip to Europe or Asia, two week cruise at those costs.

If you are not into other modes of travel, and you think you want the RV lifestyle, don't worry too much about MPG. If you are thinking of RVing as a cost saving approach to road tripping in the U.S., you do need to consider MPG, rate of progress, length and costs of stays.

But then, not everyone is willing to make a road trip in a 40 MPG car.

Just ponder a thought ๐Ÿ™‚ If we wanted "good gas mileage" we would not buy a house on wheels with poor aerodynamics and drive it down the road at 65 mph.

Knowing the mpg and size of your fuel tank just gives you and idea of how often you need to stop for fuel. Example: 10 mpg x 39 gal tank, I stop every 300 miles (give or take). "Saving money" is what you saved on the hotel bill or by eating the food in your fridge vs eating out.

Enjoy the family and the trip and don't worry about fuel mileage ๐Ÿ™‚

Just figure 8 -10mpg. I have a 03 Chateau 26Q on a chevy 3500 cutaway van chassis with an 8.1L Vortec engine and I get 9.5 and don't pull a toad. If I get 9 I don't worry about it and just enjoy the trip. This summer we did a 5700+ mile trip in 13 western states and averaged 9.78. That included all types of driving and weather and AC on both the house and cab.

I just drove a 2013 Four Winds 28Z, E-450, 6.8L, gas, 2750 miles from VA to WA. It didn't make much difference if I was going up hill, down hill, wet, dry, windy, or calm. I got 7.x mpg the entire trip.

I suspect that the only way to improve the mileage is to drive 55 mph. which I did not do.

we just purchased a winnebago, on initial trip mileage appears to be in upper 9's without a tow vehicle. Went from Prescott Az to Lakeside to PHX, home to tucson. Have not filled up since getting home to close out but it took 24 gals for 1st leg of 240 something, and estimate of 26 -27 for final from showlow, total mileage almost 500. Some pretty good pulls all directions plus strong winds.

I am contemplating a tuner from 5Star which they say will improve shifting and transmission operation, throttle control and improve the mileage a little.

There are several posts on mileage and most seem to be in the 8-10 none tow and around 8 towing! Yours may vary
