We got our current rig in March of 2016. In the SECOND HOUR of the FIRST trip, a truck going the other way threw up a rock and we drove into it, cracking the windshield from top to bottom..

We put up with the cracked windshield for TWO FREAKING years and and had it replaced just a month ago in March, 2018. $100 by the way.

As we were leaving an RV park yesterday morning, a truck passing us threw a rock and put a palm-sized star in our NEW, month old, windshield.

It is DEAD CENTER S to S, T to B, in the new glass and has since spread ALL the way from TOP to BOTTOM!!!

Our third new windshield ($1500 each) was installed last summer. When we got to Texas last November, we had to have Safelite come out and spot fix two chips. Hopefully that will keep them from spreading. We have put over 2000 miles on the rig since those spot fixes and so far so good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

When we bought our Phaeton new in 2005, we drove off the lot and into road construction. First 10 minutes we took a rock to the windshield. After sitting in the hot sun here in south Texas for the winter, it cracked all the way up, so on the way to our destination in the spring we stopped off in Red Bay and had Tiffin change out that first one.

It happens.

Brought a vehicle from Alaska to Texas for daughter. Got all the Alaska Highway warnings here. Replied I had it all covered... AWD Forester with new tires. Many paint chips an Windshield Already Cracked.
We got hit once and it was bad. Right at the end of a stretch of new chipcoat.. wonder why they call it that.. someone kicked a big chunk right at me behind the wheel. Thought it was coming through but only pulverized a .38 caliber diameter out of the top layer of the glass. Not cracked, but a crator, gone. In the wiper path. Didn't send cracks or affect wiper.
My AK Highway warning .. if a pothole has water in it.. vehicles will squirt STONES out with the water.

Just had ours replaced last week for the same reason... oh, and had the VW windshield replaced after our journey out West last year!

Not sure, and it pisses me off. I lived in Florida for 12 years prior and insurance covered windshields. Insurance will pay to repair a chip only hence the reason our windshield is still cracked. I'm tired of paying for windshields.

Me too. I'm writing my elected officials. If they can't maintain the roads in a safe condition then they need to make it so that insurance covers glass with no or low deductible.

Called my insurance company today. Replacement is standard deductible ($500 so not worth it) but they will repair for free. So, I'm having it repaired.

Blasted the snot out of a $1800 new Class A windshield in Alabama, last winter. The knuckle dragging, drooling idiots (AKA Dot workers) removed a few slabs of concrete, in a travel lane of the interstate. At the end of the day, the brainless dolts decided that leaving the void filled with gravel would be fine. No signs, no nothing. A car passed me, hit the gravel and sprayed the front of the motorhome. The fiberglass and glass both got hit pretty hard. The best part is that there was a DOT clown truck, full of morons, sitting in the shoulder near the gravel patch. I don't know if they were proud of all the damage they were creating, and stuck around to see how many windshields they were destroying, or just too stupid to know any better?

Tim ... kindof count yourself lucky that it wasn't your overcab bunk forward facing window (if you have one) that got hit by a rock!

We had that happen once around 3,000 miles from home from a rock flying off an approaching truck's tire on a gravel road. That window is not safety glass - only tempered glass. Hence our cabover window shattered in a thousand little pieces that fell down all over us and the cab area. We had it replaced ASAP and they sealed it poorly, so of course we had to drive though rain storms to get back home in CA and of course it leaked rain water. It took a couple more attempts when back home to get it replaced leak-free.

What a nightmare with that cabover window breakage. We just recently finally got the cabover window plastic coated so as to maybe either keep it protected from flying rocks ... or at least maybe keep the glass pieces held together by the plastic so that they don't fall all over everything.

Having a two windshields replaced today in fact(Vermont). One was parked too close to the road and town plow through a rock. The other had 5 stars in it from driving it daily this winter(84 mile round trip commute).
Got my first every new car two years ago. I've always made do with old diamonds in the rough. Less than 3 days in the driveway, and sister in law scraped it's bumper.

Living in New England, with big temperature differences between the inside and outside of the vehicle during the winter and plow trucks with sanders that toss stones occasionally, I have somewhat resigned myself to the idea that windshields are wear items on my cars. I think I've averaged maybe one every two or three years, though I haven't kept close track.

None for the motorhome, at least not yet, but I don't generally drive it during the winter.

I have replaced the windshield on our 08 Honda Odyssey 5 times since we purchased the van new in 09. It now has a crack, again, from a rock. In Alabama your windshield is not covered under you insurance so you get to pay the entire cost of replacement. Over $1800 so far.
