leaking leveling jack

just getting to leave on vacation when I looked under RV & saw a front Power Gear jack leaking. called rv dealer & can't get me in til late in August. anyone know of a temporary fix I can use til I get back? this is the hydraulic type---not electric. it is the Right front jack. any suggestions????

Reading the various comments in this thread...you couldnt GIVE ME Power Gear jacks let alone expect me to PAY hard earned money for them

I had a leaky jack on the left rear. It would only leak when the jack was down and under pressure. Holding up the corner of the coach that is. Turns out that the fitting between the top of the jack and the hose was loose. I took the jack out, cleaned it all up and after removing the fitting, I put some pipe compound on the threads (not Teflon tape)and reassembled the whole deal. Works like a champ now. Good luck

Where is the jack leaking? From the large piston itself or one of the hydraulic lines? Is it a large leak that you can see where it is coming from or more like a wet area somewhere under the jack or on the hydraulic lines?

We also have a leaking jack - slow leak. It only leaks when it's extended over a long period of time. It holds, so when we are ready to leave we top off the fluid so that the alarm doesn't sound while driving and it's good until the next time, sometimes 4-5 months down the road. We workamp, so we tend to sit for longer periods, but we've been doing this about 1 year and it hasn't gotten any worse. Ours is 14 years old.

Getting ready to leave on a trip and just noticed I had a leaking jack. How do I add fluid to it?

I think you mis-read the post. I never said put brake fluid in the system. I suggested rubbing it on the exposed ram and retracting so that it comes in contact with the seal on that jack only. Transmission stop leak could also be used in this method instead of brake fluid. This will not stop a big leak, but will sometimes temporarily seal a weeping seal.

Wood blocks (for a Class A ((or even a Class C))...perish the thought! These jacks are, IMO worth their weight in gold!
Even tho the $600+ bucks each is a bit much.

Depending on the leakage, my jack did go down and, for the most part, held. I had to re-set after the 3rd day (motorhome started to rock just a bit)...and the alarm went off on the way home...but I added some Dextron III, and that stopped the alarm. Got home without incident and that's when I orderd the new replacement jack.

Can't you get a good 5-10 ton bottle jack to put under the landing gear pad and jack it up when you get to your destination. Lift the bad jack up with bottle jack and then raise the other with your panel on manual.
Or. Before we had all this fine automatic stuff you could level the coach with wood blocks? Now that's a novel idea isn't it?

UPDATE----------I e-mailed POWER GEAR after I posted this question.

BAD NEWS---- I need to replace the jack,non-repairable. as someone stated, have to order thru a distributor.

yrusoslo---I also thought about scissor jack but won't work.
jerseyjim----non-repairable jack, need to buy new one. I also don't
have heavy duty equipment but know someone who does.
fcooper---- I just may try your BRAKE FLUID idea, all i'm looking for
is a short term temporary fix.

I also have a very minor leak in the left front ram.

I've wondered if a product like Lucs Oil or Valvoline Transmission stop leak would help. Since the unit uses basic transmission fluid, would such a product help in significantly slowing or stopping the leak?

Thanks for the info. I still have the old jack...and will, at some time try to do what you did. Nothing to lose....................
