MH Licensing costs in NV, AZ and Utah?

I am seriously considering leaving California for either NV, AZ or Utah. I am trying to factor in all tax and licensing related differences in each of these states to help me choose the best location for my situation. Can those of you with class A MHs and living in any of those states give me some idea in what you are paying in MH licening and registration costs each year? Please provide the year and length of MH. and indicate whether it is diesel or not. Thanks.

Avoid Utah! If your MH is longer than 32 feet, they will RIP YOU OFF!!! You will pay property tax AND by the weight. Then there's the lovely state safety inspection just waiting to find something wrong with your coach so they can RIP YOU OFF too!

Trust me, go with Nevada or Arizona and avoid Utah like the plague.

I apologize to any that think I may have blindsided them by my answer, that was never my intent. I addressed the OPs inquiry with the specific answer he asked for. I did not intend to take this thread into a ditch. Thank you to those concerned. No worries here. Others have explained AZ MVD common formula for license fees so I see no need for further input on my part concerning this.

The easiest way to accomplish a state to state comparison involves travel. Here is how we did it. I retired, date inconsequential, and then my wife did. Sometime in July of 09 we locked up the S&B and took off. When we drove in to a location we thought might be a retirement choice we dropped the jacks. While we were looking a properties and getting a feel for the locals I would make an appointment with a tax preparer. Believe it or not most TPs did not charge me for their advice. Be up front about what you are trying to accomplish. Trust me when I tell you this, a realtor is not ever going to mention personal property tax. You will now be equipped with all your tax costs and a quick stop at a local DMV office will get you an exact cost on your registration and license fees. It is simple and accurate and gives you a reason to run some fuel through the "depreciating asset".

I can share with you when we left the Sierra Foothills just over 10 years ago, our motorhome registration fees were the only a small part of our savings. Electric & Natural Gas cost were half. Registration fees & insurance was about 2/3 of what California charged. One of the biggest savings was home insurance, California home insurance was more than double because of earthquake insurance. Property taxes are same per unit cost but because base price/appraised value is less than California the amount paid each year is less. Bottom line, we saved money leaving the Golden State! Now we keep more of our Gold!

I can't offer any insight to AZ and UT, but here in NV in you will be charged a Government Services Tax which is based on the MSRP of your coach and decreases each year. When we first moved here in 2010 the tax on my 2009 coach was ~$3,000. For 2013 it was $2,200.

NV does not have a state income tax so that should be taken into consideration in your overall evaluation.

So this tax continues year after year? That's a big tax cumulatively.

Thanks Criteydog for your awesome offer. I wait with anticipation for what you find out. This forum just couldn't function with such enthusiastic members giving their all to help a fellow rver. You have a great day and do keep your light-hearted nature and very highly commemorable "can do" spirit. I would expect nothing less from an honorable ex-serviceman. Have a wonderful day and thanks again.

PS: Happy that I could bring a smile to your face today.

To those others that provided me answers and some other issues to think about regarding this issue, I truly appreciate your responses as well.

I have to pay the environmental fee. I gave the OP a truthfull answer to the question he asked. I also let him know his fee could be different. Let him figure it out.

Rollnhome-
I sure wish you had qualified your original answer by providing this info in your first reply. Little did we know.......

No, actually it would be much easier for me and perhaps useful to other forum readers if you called them for me. Then post what they tell you so more RV.com readers can be informed. I tried calling DMV in California and it was such a nightmare just trying to get through that it has made me a bit gun-shy.

To get that 'special' rate in Arizona, you have to have one of two things:

1. Know the "secret" handshake at the time of registration...or

2. Be related to Sheriff Joe...:E

Good luck....Dennis
X2 That post is totally irrelevant to how AZ fees are calculated, but it was funny!

How exactly did you see this as a 'useful' thread...:h

The OP came on here asking everyone to tell him how much they pay in taxes/fees in their state for THEIR coach...

without providing ANY information about HIS coach or what HE is paying.

Then, when given the BEST advice, which was contact each State's MVD where he could get the BEST and ONLY correct answer specific to HIS coach, he came back with a SNARKY comment, indicating HE is TOO LAZY to get the information himself and EXPECTS someone else to do it for him.

IMHO, he's a TROLL and needs to climb back into his ivory tower where he can oversee us peasants.....Dennis

Probably best to consider more comprehensive guides to state costs considering your state of residence and if mobile where you spend your time. Items like state income tax, property tax, sales/use tax, vehicle registration, housing costs, food, fuel, insurance, medical, etc.

Cool. Climbing out of the ditch, that is good. This is at least potentially a useful thread to me... I live in Illinois. After a stiff sales tax, annual license renewals here are $101...

So Nevada, Arizona, and Utah all charge a "very high" personal property tax on RV's every year?
And Utah has annual inspections and emissions checks on RV's?

Ditch her I Come

In the Pretty great state of Utah you pay property taxes on your MH. The taxes are based on where your residence is located in the state, the value the MH and the age. I live in SLC and my taxes are 1400.00 a year (2007) based on the factors above. You also have to go through a 200.00 dollar state inspection every other year

South Dakota is your best bet, plenty of info on the net on how to go about it.
