James Island, my 1st choice but have visited Oak Plantation too. Sightseeing sites are closer to James Island but it can be a PITA to navigate the turns on some roads leading to the campground with a big rig while Oak Plantation is right on US 17.

Does anyone know if either Oak Plantation or James Island has decent AT&T cell service? Thanks in advance.

We stay at Oak Plantation when we are in Charleston. They now have cable, and have made some upgrades. They lost some of the big trees last year.

We love James Island County Park. Have been a few times and are heading back after Thanksgiving. It's one of the best parks we have ever stayed at.

They do say no adult beverages, but if you don't flaunt it, they don't bother you. In fact, the store there sold those beer can wrappers which makes the can look like a Coke.

Thanks everyone! So far, Oak Plantation is the only one with availability due to the festival of lights....so it looks like we'll be giving it a try!

Lovely campground. We went in September of 2010, the week after labor day a few years back. Place was empty. First night we got there, there was a bad storm. In the middle of the night we heard thunder that sounded like a grenade firing off. Fifth wheel about 50 feet from us got hit by lightning. Their entire camper was fried. When I think about this campground, that story always comes to mind.

Have stayed at both Oak Plantation and James Island County Park. At that time of year James Island is magical! Oak plantation was okay, but loved, loved James Island!

We have stayed at both. We like both. We love Charleston.
To us which one we stay at depends on which direction we are going and leaving from.
Charleston has some rush hour traffic so whichever avoids the most wins.
There is a county park that is nice but we have never stayed.
Sounds like more kids.

Oak Plantation is very nice. We stayed there a week, but look at James Island also. We really liked them. You can't go wrong with either one. Charleston is fantastic.

No matter where you decide to stay and all of the above are good locations, make it a point to visit the James County Festival of Lights. We have seen many different ones around the country and this one is the best.

About the only thing that I can add, is the main road in the campground has speed bumps which seem to be every 20 ft or so (just kidding-not that close) which are annoying. As 2Retired said the traffic on the road in front of the campground can be very heavy during rush hour, so try to arrive/depart at off peak hours.

Great review! Thanks! We only take one small dog with us traveling, so that shouldn't be a problem. Any rules about adult beverages? How far to downtown Chucktown?
