Rough freeways.

For all you experienced travelers which state has the roughest freeways? I haven't been in every state but many of them and I vote California.

Another that comes to mind is I-88 from Binghampton NY to Albany. The legend is that some NY state senator had the road built to cut down on his commute.

I'm a right laner on a 2 lane road. I stay out of the left lane unless someone in front of me is very slow. On I-88 east. I stayed in the left lane until I saw someone come up behind me, then I moved over. This hurt a lot less than traveling in the right lane on this particular stretch of road.

Double ditto on I-10 east of Breaux Bridge LA.

Mi and Ca overall WVa twisty real hard pulls, Virginia has the worst 2 lanes and they say they aren't going to fix them. I20 in MS was very bad last time I was there, going in April. I10 across the swamp, (it's all swamp) BTW/Virginia Rt 690 has a 1 way bridge with 4 ft tall 1ft thick concrete barriers, 3yrs ago someone knocked 1 side down, 2years ago someone knocked the other side down. Now they are finally getting around for fixing it.

Don't cuss farmers with your mouth full.

Overweight semi trucks equal bad roads.

Actually BIG DPs (and buses) now are allowed to have 24,000 lb drive axles...4,000 more than trucks are allowed. Tandem truck axles are only allowed 34,000 lbs BUT MHs can have a 24K drive and right behind it a 20K tag although 16K is the most I've seen on a tag axle...6K more than tandem axle trucks and 4,000 more on a single axle...so who is doing the most damage to our roads??? Yes, we are special.

Second worst is I-20 between Birmingham and Atlanta. Between the never-ending construction and washboard roadway you cannot move smoothly or hear yourself think.
Third: the Pennsylvania Turnpike, pretty much everywhere.

Absolutely on Louisiana 1-10. Shockingly pathetic piece of roadway.

As a PA. resident, the turnpike is our shameful monument to corruption. At one point the Allentown paper did an investigation, and discovered that turnpike is operated at a cost per mile that is FOUR TIMES the amount used to maintain, repair and upgrade RT 80. The system has such a massive pile of income that every inch of the roadway should be literally flawless, from end to end, all day, every day. Instead it's a bureaucrat boondogle on par with Soviet Russia. A few years back, one of our clown governors tried to expand the scam by tolling route 80, and turning it over to the turnpike commision. That didn't go well for him.

I too like that one but I'm changing it to CA, the bumper sticker I'll have next week will prove it. I'll send a few out to past Governors and politicians but mostly to Brown, he started it in CA.

I was just a school kid when Ike pushed the Interstate Highway System, it was a great idea but things have changed and the engineering of the 50's and 60's aren't cutting it today. We(in CA at least) try to get Federal funds for maintenance, by law and mandate, maintenance and emergency repair grant money like FEMA money cannot be used to make improvements, only to return roads and such to their original condition, no improvements can be made with that money and States cannot add their own monies to the Federal funds to cover the cost of the improvements.

Here is where Einstein's thought about Insanity comes into play. Rebuilding I-5 in CA using the same specs as were used to build the hwy and which have not proven adequate is insane as they are doing it over and over and expect different results each time. I expect this is going on throughout the country after reading your comments.

The comment about the CA legislature circumventing the purpose of bond money for other uses is rampant and the more liberal CA becomes, the more loop holes are inserted in the bills to allow stealing the money for other purposes.

I just picked up a newer Newmar near Palm springs, not a rattle or squeak the roads are so smooth. That is until I hit Hwy 99 headed north and it didn't take long to find a rattle, hate it to work on.

I-59 was redone a few years ago and is now passable. It was BAD, though.

I vote for Indiana I-70 around Indianapolis. Was through there last November and the DW and I agreed it was the WORST in all our travels.

Some parts of WI are terrible, some are excellent. I43 in Ozaukee county, just north of Milwaukee is horrible. You need a kidney belt to drive through there.

I65 through Indiana is no picnic, especially around Indy.

Lest we not forget the I-90 corridor through IL. Closer you get to Chicago the worse the interstate gets and the more signs they have erected warning of bad roads ahead instead of just fixing the **** pavement. Not to mention they are toll roads. I once had to pay 10 Cents to get on I-90 just east of Chicago on my motorcycle. REALLY, talk about nickel and diming motorist for crappy roads.

Wisconsin roads have really gone to pot. Oklahoma were poor. Some Cal are bad. Most places city roads suffer. Louisiana still has somebad sections from storms. Overall everything has slid around the country.

I vote is for calif. I swear they build in pot holes into their roads and they really go to heck after that. I try to avoid calif at all costs.

Having recently used I-10 to I-20 from AZ to GA I was impressed with how good they were overall with very little construction. Even though it's further using 20 I will in the future as I-40 is terrible with lots of construction.

The new concrete roads with the steep shoulders (they are 16+" higher) are surprisingly smooth and may even hold up considering how much rebar they put in them.
