I had to remove the frame to repair my 2 pane (1 slider). After removal, you'll find screws hold the the two ends of the frame together. Once you split the frame, the window will come out.
I have not tried it, but read another post recently where the poster said he removed the flexible tracks above and below the window to get clearance to remove the sliding window without removing the frame. This might be worth a try.
