The OP has a gasser and a number of posts are from guys with diesels...that's an apples to orange comparison. Also, the altitude gain will not affect the turbo diesels like it will a non turbo gasser.

I have to believe that some did not read gasser but I get the idea nothing goes fast up Vail pass!

Yes, I think that was the point, we knew he said gasser but just wanted to point out that nobody is going to fly up that pass.

My ol 95 Bounder w/460 and toad, runs up vail pass at 35 MPH with no problem. It would go faster but I limit my climbing to 3,200 RPM. Maybe the Banks Power Pack exhaust system has something to do with it? GRIN

I would call normal on that. My 5.4 pulling 7k did about the same.
As long as you are running cool just enjoy the ride.

Yes! I lived in that area for 25 years and drove cars, buses, RV's, and trucks. Gas RV's seem to do 25-30 mph. Heading east from Vail, it's a seven percent grade for miles before you reach the top at over 10,000 feet above sea level. High altitude definitely plays a part here!

Vail pass is a very steep L O N G grade and I think we went up back in May at about 33-35 mph. Our 2008 Dynasty weighs just over 40,000 lbs. pulling a 3,500 lb. toad. Our engine and transmission temp went up but was not bad, maybe up about 5-8 degrees each.

Remember not only is it steep, it's a very high elevation too. Combination of the two are hard on any internal combustion engine. Did you notice that even most of the cars were down around 45 or so?

Sounds about right to me? I traded my F350 V10 for the 6.7L diesel. Added 10-15 mph to the Vail Pass speed. Pulling a 30' 5th wheel with a Ford Explorer behind the 5th. V10 speed was similar to what the OP quoted.

Having been over Vail pass and the eisenhower tunnel a few times you could get down to about 25 MPH. I pull it at about 35 MPH and I am pushing the heat up to over 200 by the time I get up it. @ WOT I would overheat so I try to get it in the sweet spot of around 1850 RPM. just sit back and enjoy the ride.
