The Dometic in our 11 year-old MH died last season, just 2 days before we were leaving for 3 weeks on the Oregon coast. We managed for two weeks, buying ice every day. We must have hit every Fred Meyer store on highway 101!
We gave up at 16 days and headed home. We decided that a residential fridge was a possible sale killer, and we expect to give up the RV life after this season. We went with our preferred repair shop, JR's RV Repair and Maintenance in Sedro-Wolley. A new Dometic, which fitted into the space the old one occupied with no modifications needed, set us back about $1800. With more modern insulation, the new fridge is about 15% roomier than the old one. They were able to change out the fridges through the house door.
My gut feel is that, if your gas/electric fridge is over 10 years old, you should seriously consider replacing it. Ours had the dreaded yellow powder round the base of the flue, so we knew it was a goner.
