2 lbs. of ground hamburger, cooked until brown. Use baster to get all excess grease removed from pot. Add 1 can Cambell's Cream of Mushroom soup. Add 1 can of Cambell's cream of celery soup. Add 1 quart of (we use home canned tomatoes) can use two cans of tomatoes (not drained). Add 1/2 Can of Cambells Cheddar Cheese soup. Stir all ingredients together and warm to hot but not boiling. Ladle over slices of toast.
Add salt and pepper to taste, and can add more cheddar cheese soup if desired.

We make this for breakfast. The Navy called this Minced Beef on Toast.

Remove the grease......:S

Did they really serve SOS in the Navy? Maybe to the Skimmers or Airdales but not to Smoke Boats.

Gary, - I was the original poster to question that your recipe was SOS. Sorry about the excessive criticism that followed. SOS is a dish kind of like chili among its devotees and some are quite rabid about it. You have an interesting dish that I hope some give a try but it's just not SOS to the purists.

Well it was a Navy concocktion, I don't know what they put in it but I tried to make it and that is the ingredients that I used. Simple==if you don't think it is good don't try and make it and just delete. I like the way everybody on this forum just tries to bad mouth everyone, or just looks for
the simplest thing to complain about. That's one reason I usually don't even bother posting on this forum anymore. Most people on here don't even have a life except this forum. There take that----

Made with chipped beef (dry, salted beef) is how I remember it. My mom also made a variation with dried salt cod, always with white gravy.

You are correct. Salty as heck too. Hamburger is a whole new recipe. A bit of " What's this here sauce" a must!

Here's a military SOS story for ya...

I was USAF '81-'07. While deploying to Bosnia we had to stay at Rhein Main for 3 days to draw weapons, training etc. Being married, having not ate in a military chow hall for years, I was exited to have the breakfast experience of my military youth.

I got in line and ordered eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuit and gravy, the Army NCO behind the counter gruffly said "you can only have one meat". OK I remember the drill, go sit down, get back in line and get the other meat.

Me - "Ok I'll just have sausage...no bacon"
NCO - "You can only have one meat"
Me - "I know please put the bacon back I will take the sausage only"
NCO "You can only have one meat"
Me - " I only want one meat...sausage...what is the other meat"
NCO - "Gravy is meat"
Me ":h"

Only in the Army. Trust me there was no meat in that gravy.

At least the chow hall in Bosnia (contractor was off the chain good!

Still miss the chow hall experience and enjoy it whenever I can, such as retiree appreciation days.

Not a meal in modern Navy. Unfortunately, not much cooking goes on either. Lots of boil a bag food. "21 day meal rotation" Sure seems like you see the same old meals more often than that.

Ate something in the field with Marines that might fit. Some kind of white gravy with red meat like substance served over hockey pucks. I didn't really like the stuff but it softened the "biscuits" and was hot in the field tent.

What years was this served in the military? The reason I ask is that condensed soups aren't a part of SOS in the military. They would have been considered too heavy for supply line transport prior to 1975.
