black eyed peas and cornbread. We had the Farmland smoked hog jowls this year and they were great.

Happy new year to everyone.

My parents would butcher a hog in the winter and hang it in the corn crib to cool then finish cutting it up the next day. The head was put in a wash tub and I can remember coming home from school and walking past that hogs head in the porch. It went to my Grandparents and they made head cheese. Never tasted it and I don't believe I ever will.

I agree with you on the head cheese but take the smoked jowls, slice them up like bacon and fry them up. Hard to beat.

We had our collard greens (for money) and Hoppin' John (for luck) a little while ago. In my family, hoppin' john is made with jowl or ham, rice and red field peas (cowpeas) To use anything else would cause my ancestors to come back and GIT me! Besides, it would probably be unlucky, and I need all the luck I can GET! Happy New Year!

In my family it was blackeyed peas, cornbread and buttermilk. I wasn't too fond of the milk, but it seemed that a sip was enough to ensure good luck.
I eat smoked jowl fairly often in a JLT.

when I was very young, which by the way was a long long time ago, my folks with the relatives would buy and butcher hogs and we like the Indians would not waste any thing. the good old days I've heard them call them. but I have had a lot of food not eaten by many city people.

My birthday is New Year's Eve and we had Polish golumpki's (stuffed cabbage rolls)and pierogi's for dinner. My wife makes them as good as mom used to and the only thing I miss is my Mom. Happy New Year to one and all!

We have never had hog jowls, don't know if we can buy them locally. Wife won't ear cornbread, I like it though. We went out for a fabulous prime rib with all the fixins last night so today will be low key, new years is not a big feast day for us. Happy New Year everyone.
