Suggestions for Pie Irons/Sandwich Makers?

We have two boys, ages 9 and 12, and would like to pick up a few pie irons/sandwich makers for grilled cheese, etc., on family trips. Single, double, aluminum, cast iron...too many choices! What would you recommend for a family of four and why?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Before you buy the cast iron for kids...they are very heavy, especially for a kid. I have had the aluminum double for years and never had a problem. I also have a cast iron panini and round burger cooker and never use either on. They are just too heavy to sit there and hold over the fire.

Wichever way you go...alum or cast iron, get the double sandwich cooker. If you get tired of sandwiches two triangles of crecent roll dough fill the bottom perfectly for pizzas and desert pies with pie filling. Two triangles in the top and two on the bottom.

If you melt and aluminum pie iron in the fire, your doing something wrong.

You can't call them "pie irons" if they are made of aluminum.

I agree Rome cast iron is the way to go. The handles can be removed and the iron seasoned in the oven, but as long a fire is available that would be the first choice.
If it were me i would go with 2 singles, that way neither youngster has to wait.
