Ipod touch or nexus 7 ?

We are thinking of getting our kids each a device for Christmas this year, but having a bit of a quandry. Apple sells factory refurb 4th generation ipod touch 32gb for $179, and amazon sells refurb 2012 Asus nexus 7 32 gb tablets can be had for a similar $159. So same internal storage.

The iPod touch is of course smaller, smaller screen but more portable and better build quality, while the nexus 7 is much larger, and of course iOS vs Android Jelly Bean.

My wife is a big Apple fan, and we both have iPhones so I have no real experience with android We have some apps for the kids on our phones, though not that much money invested. I have heard the google play store is now very competitive with kid app availability.

So what are your experiences with android / google play and kids? Do you think the larger screen would be more beneficial or the smaller ?

Thanks

Unless it needs to fit in a pocket for walking around, there is NO situation where I wouldn't choose the Nexus as a gift for my kid.

But you are not a kid. The OP is buying the device for a kid!
I agree adult use go Nexus but for a kid the touch maybe the better way to go.
I thought it was inferred. But, I guess not.

The whole portability issue makes the touch more kid friendly. Adults may have a place other than a pocket to store things a kid generally doesn't.
Do you see your kid carrying the Nexus around in their hand the entire time?
Only because you've been on this board as long as I have will I respond again. I've already said twice, now for the third time "Unless it needs to fit in a pocket for walking around".

Although I think I've already implied it multiple times now, I'll answer your question with "no" I don't see my kid walking around with a Nexus. But, since my family has both, and an iPad Mini and two 10" iPads I believe I'm in a position to answer the OP with my opinion. And our opinions is what OP asked for in the first place.

And I'm sticking by my original statement that the Nexus is a better choice for a kid (or anyone for that matter) than an iPod Touch. Can we let this go, now?

Relax no need to get yourself in a huff. You've expressed your thoughts, I have expressed mine. You don't have to respond any further if you don't care to.

Just PM'd the thread originator. The 2012 Nexus 7 is on sale this morning for $99 New. For Kids, my second choice would be the previous edition Amazon 7" Kindle. The new HDX is nice. However, the previous edition was dual core with decent screen. The Parental Controls work great. It's also alot cheaper. I think normal price is near $138 new. It was on sale the other day for $118. I bought my daughters 8.9" Kindle from a local store (Fred Meyers) that had a much cheaper insurance policy than Amazon.

I had a 1st gen N7 that I used for a year then passed on to my daughter when I got a 2nd gen N7. Both tablets are used daily and are going strong with zero build or quality issues.

I sort of did the same thing only I gave the newer version to my son and I just kept the older version. The older version continues to do the job for me.

It more realist to compare the iTouch to the Nexus 5 (for size).
The Nexus can do phone calls (prepaid, contract-free), has GPS...

The Nexus 7 would probably be fun for the first month or so until it breaks. On the other hand, they will probably still be using the iPod years from now.

I have an iPod 2nd gen (reject from kids !).
It is almost as good as a door knob, because of discontinued support. No more app installs/updates.

The 2nd generation iPod is 11 years old - released in July 2002. Many Android devices are obsolete as far as new operating systems as soon as they are released.

The original Nexus 7 was of questionable build quality. The 2013 version is much better.
