Problem installing Windows 10

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, 64bit, 4 gig ram, running Windows 7 and am having lot of trouble trying to install Windows 10. My computer is elegible for the upgrade and I have it on my desktop computer and like it so want to upgrade this one too.

When I click on the little Windows 10 upgrade icon in the system tray in the lower right, a window opens that says it is downloading Windows 10. It gets to 99% and stays that way for about 30 minutes and then the window changes to the green bar and says "Downloading Windows 10" with the progress bar showing the green area moving to the right. My computer passed the upgrade test from the website.

It has been that way for about 6 hours now and the hard drive is blinking which indicates to me that something is happening. Should it take this long? I don't remember this kind of problem when I upgraded my desktop computer. Should I just let it continue or should I reboot and see what happens? Any ideas are welcome.

Barney, sorry it has taken awhile to get back here, works been crazy. I was looking for the uninstall article I used but can't locate it. I had another laptop that hung up installing and we went back and made sure we disconnected all external devices such as printers hard drives USB hubs etc, turned off the anti virus and then the install went straight through. I'll keep digging for the other article. Good luck.

I have an older pc with XP (not connected to internet), to use the XP bulk photo resizer (why did MS drop this?), and to use an old Lotus program which won't run on 7.

I have a netbook that I've kept on XP for ham radio and other SW that still runs fine on XP and isn't available for anything higher. I know of car audio/alarm shops that have the same - some of the manufacturers haven't updated their SW to work with Windows 7, let alone anything else. There are valid reasons for keeping an XP system or two around.

I even ran into an enterprise network a few weeks ago that is running XP on some of their main systems. In their case, they have been too cheap to upgrade to systems that run under Windows 7.

If you're having difficulty upgrading to Windows 10 using the icon on your computer, it has helped quite a few people I know to download the update to a USB stick and update from it.

Here's a link to the official Microsoft site for doing that: Windows 10 download DON'T use the Update Now link; scroll down a bit till you come to the link for making a USB or DVD

Follow the instructions for downloading the software and then execute the update from your copy. Depending on how you use it, you can either do a standard upgrade where your files are retained or you can do a "clean install".

As a comment for the OP, I also had a Toshiba Satellite that I updated to Windows 10. I found it critically important to update the drivers before doing so using the ones provided on the Toshiba website. Without those drivers I had BSOD (blue screen of death) issues and had to revert the computer back to Windows 8.1. Once I had installed the drivers, the update went without problem.

I had my desktop going for over 7 hours & finally forced a restart & started over again. It took 5 hours to download. Then I started the install. I'm still not happy with 10. I have no smart phone or mobile device. So far I have found no new benefit on 10 that 7 didn't have. There is so much stuff in 10 I want to delete but can't, such as Cortana. I've spent days of wasted time trying to get it to look & work like 7. I wish we could stay with 7, but with the end of updates in 3 years I've been told that would leave the pc vulnerable.

Thank you to all that have responded thus far! I have not solved the problem yet but am going through the suggestions and trying them. Right now, I have tried to shut down the computer (typing this on my Linux netbook) but it seems to be stuck on the "logging off" screen for the past several minutes. Will give it 15 more and then do a hard shut down with the power key.

I will report back here with the results of your suggestions. Thank you very much.

I had a similar hangup issue installing Win 10 on a Win 7 system last week. I found a suggestion online to just stop it and go to Control Panel and Windows Updates and tell it to find updates. It found the Windows 10 update (apparently already fully downloaded) and Win 10 then installed without problems. Your situation may not be the same, but it worked for me.

Try going into Win 7 automatic updates and select "never allow updates". I found my computer was trying to update 7 while installing 10. Went fine after that but it is still a slow process. Also use windows update instead of the icon for win 10 in your tray. Found those suggestions on Windows forum and it worked for me.

As an aside to all this, in all of my installations, the Restore Points were turned off. Make sure you get them turned back on (Rt-click Start/system/system protection/configure).

Actually I'm more concerned with the "2 minutes to 99 percent" than with anything else. That's awful quick. In any case, yes, reboot and see what happens. Watch for any messages. If it doesn't say anything pertinent, reboot once or twice more to make sure you are getting good full boots, and then go directly to the Microsoft update page and run the update from there.

In general, when an update is at a critical stage, you'll see the traditional "Don't turn off your computer", otherwise you should be OK (but, not recommended) to interrupt the update and for the most part, it will pick up where it leaves off.

I've done 7 of these so far and got through all of them with minimal stress. The only one that gave any real issues was the Win7 machine (with poorer specs than yours), and that just required, as I suggested above, going directly to MS.

You may want to try to install using the Media Creation Tool. By using this you can create a bootable DVD or USB thumbdrive.

Here's a link:

Scroll down and click the "Download tool now" button.

We had one of our WIN 7 LAPTOPS only make to the 20% download point and stopped there. This was the DRIVERS section... Finally had to reset the WIN 7 back to its original SAVE POINT. Then things went ok after that... Ours took around two hours as I recall to complete a 100% install time...

I also was using FIREFOX...

My second WIN7 Laptop went through the process without issues... My two WIN8 Laptops both had no issues... My two older DELL M90's WIN XP PRO are still laughing at me... I'm still running them however for my Ham Radio operations...

Do you mean you deleted the download? I am not sure I have anything to uninstall right now.
Where would I find the download? As far as I know it is not in the normal Firefox download area and I don't see anything in the computer download directory. I don't think it has updated yet because I have not gone through any install procedure.

I have a very fast cable connection via Comcast. The download to 99% only took about two minutes. Then the box changed to the moving green bar and that is where it is now. Latest updates to Windows 7 have been installed.
