update or replace

Just a quick question. How long do Garmin GPS last on the norm? Debating whether to spend the money to do a one time update or just replace it. It is a mod 255 and about 5 yrs old.

I still have my c330 and it works great, when I come into new constuction I usally just keep going until gps recognizes, then all is good. The reason I am keeping this because it has a truck setting that keeps me on the right roads. The new ones don't unless you spend 300 dollars.

I have the lifetime updates for our garmin 7220 but I tried to up date it this summer and it came back no longer supported. Lifetime was a short life for me.

My 2005 2620 died recently.

I first purchased a new Garmin, then discovered my Android 5" phone worked nearly as well as the new Garmin. (Sygic does not speak the name of the next turn street.) The Garmin was returned.

I use Sygic software which now will cost about $40 for North America maps (Tom-Tom). No broadband data needed because the maps are stored on the phone.

Updates appear frequently at no cost.

One license allows installation on all owned Android machines like wife's phone and our shared tablet. So plenty of backup GPS machines at no additional cost.

I have a III+ that works fine after 14 years.

I went through the same thing last year. The battery is dead, only works when plugged in. It was getting clunky and slow.
I deleted everything and loaded an update. Its like a new unit, quick and accurate.
Still have to keep it plugged in though.

I have a Garmin 176 that I got in 2001 still work great other than the interface with the PC. Takes a older cable instead of USB.

My GPS is over 7 years old and going strong. Updates used to be for free now they are not. IMHO, JMHO highway funds have been cut so drastically that there just is not numerous "new" highway building that there was years ago.

I full time and when I hit a stretch of new highway the graphics on the screen get a little squewed but the satellite picks up the new road just fine and the directions are corrected.....all "without" downloading new maps for over 7 years!

So I don't see any need to buy a new one. Plus mine has so many bells and whistles they don't make one anymore with all the options I have to replace it.

I say keep it. IMHO it's a giant scam making the consumer think they HAVE to upgrade or buy the new model they have out or they will never arrive at their destination.:R

I've got an old StreetPilot C330 that was bought in 2005 (if I recall). It cost us about $100 at Walmart and worked well. Looked into buying the map update a few years ago and it would cost almost as much as a new unit. So, we bought a new 1450 with the lifetime maps and traffic. The old C330 now resides on the handlebar of the motorcycle and it's still going strong - just doesn't have the most current maps installed!

I have a Garmin (think it is also a 255) that just won't quit. I bought a lifetime update because it was only a few bucks more than one-time.

I still have and use by Garmin Street Pilot 2720 which I bought in 2005. I recently bought a new 2797 which is now my primary used in the RV and the 2720 now lives in my toad.
