Windows 10 updates playing havoc on computers

Has anyone else experienced problems with the latest Windows 10 update?? I have 2 new Dell computers that came with Windows 10 installed and one older one that was updated to 10. Last week the same identical problem happened on all of them so I think it was an update.. On each of the computers I had MS Office 2010 (student version) installed, registered and was working fine...THEN...all of a sudden, each computer changed the MS Word, Excel, etc default program from the 2010 Office Version I bought to the new Office program that come of the computers and with the update to Windows 10 on the older computer. I never purchased, used or activated the new Office Program. Now I couldn't open excel documents without being prompted to purchase the new Office program. I uninstalled the trial Windows Office Program that was preinstalled (never activated) on the new computers and then was able to access my 2010 Office excel documents again.. but now every time I open one of them to edit it, the editing function is disabled and I am being told they might be a security risk?? I can bypass this notice and am able to edit again but this has happened to every MS Excel document that was created when using the MS Office 2010. A real pain in the rear.. Is this another MS way of forcing you into something you really don't want??? Anyone else experienced this...Maybe time to switch to Open Office..

some of my programs are older versions, and if I upgrade to Win10, I'll have to buy all new programs too, so the cost becomes more than "just upgrade" ...

Plus, everything I have works fine with Win7, and we have three PC's with Win7, so we'd then have variation. AND, I tried Win8 and it sucked, so will stay with Win7 as long as it works. Sounds like Win8.1 and Win10 are no better.

Based on what MS does every few years and with it's spy software installed in every PC, when Win7 no longer works it might send me to MAC. IF I have to learn a new OS, might as well. I've worked on both and if I need to buy a new PC in a few years when Win7 dies, I'll have a choice then.

Can't prove that by me. I am 0 for 2. A new HP desktop I got in 11/15 was so bad due to forced updates with LAN connection that it had to be returned after spending hours and days on the phone with MS. My new laptop has several Win10 issues still on going from forced updates. All MS programs too. When I get back home I will have to do a full factory restore of this computer.
I would never recommend anyone buy or "upgrade" to Win 10.

After many, many years of fighting with Microsoft's operating systems, I reluctantly switched to a Mac five years ago. Best computer move I ever made. No crashes, no hassles, no lost work, no patches, no viruses. The bad news, of course, is that the Mac is overpriced and there are some really good apps that just won't work on a Mac.

But at least the OS is smooth and solid.

I have updated a W/8.1 Acer computer to W/10 back in September and have no problems! I bought a tablet that has W/10 and no problems. Quite pleased with it, especially over 8.1. Have an old Dell that is not qualified for an upgrade, downloaded the GXW Control Panel and shut off the upgrade. It has W/7 Pro and will leave it unless Dell makes it compatible before the 07/31/16 freebie!

While there have been many problems with Windows 10 reported with updates, there have been few with new PCs except for the fact it is a different user interface. And the latter is easily fixed with StartIsBack or Classic Shell (that I have done on all that I have updated).

I think buying a new Windows computer with other than Windows 10 (and even paying more for the privilege) is highly questionable both in the short term and the long term.

I have personally updated over a dozen PCs with Windows 10 (both my own and friends) and have yet to have any issue. On my primary desktop and laptop I did a clean install of Windows 10 sometime after the update, not to fix any problem but to just get rid of the debris that Windows leaves around after a period of usage of the older version of Windows.

For those that are still contemplating their direction with Windows 10, I suggest that you consider that the vast majority of Windows 10 users are quite happy with it compared with past versions. People with issues speak much louder than those that do not have issues.

I deleted (Uninstalled) the Microsoft Office products that were bundled with my upgraded computer and installed Apache Open Office.. not one Microsoft update issue to date. Works great.. (I've done that since... well since win 98 at least, Never used Microsoft office, went with Open long time ago).

Warning: Political comment (well not really)
Open office even helped get a Governor re-elected for another term.

Good Luck with that. I thought I could do the same with a new HP but was disappointed to find out it was not really an option.

I just recently ordered/received a new Dell Inspiron 17 laptop with Windows 10 as their was no other op system option offered. It appears that on this new machine, I can uninstall 10 and roll back to Win 7. Will be doing that this weekend. :W Have no use for 10 and have been quite happy with 7.

Check all your other Microsoft apps like calculator,calendar,maps etc. If they don't work you have the same problem that I have and many others that are Googling for answers. With no solutions that work.

another broke thing in windows 10 .. my machine

Mircosoft Store and Cortina (sp).. both state I do NOT have internet "mifi"..

but Edge and Firefox has no issues using my 'mifi'... in Windows 10 pro.

2 years ago.. Internet Explorer broke my operating system (windows 7 pro).. it took Microsoft (3) 8 hour days online and on the phone to fix my operating system..

I have been using Windows forever, not by choice but as the default standard. I have never spent a minute on a Microsoft helpline. The main reason for that is that my career was in IT but I learned to live in the Windows world unrelated to my IT work.

I have installed Windows 10 on all of my PCs (4) and many friends and clients with never a problem. The main thing one has to understand with Windows 10 is that it is Microsoft's move into the Apple/Google world of a single "account login." With Windows 10, Microsoft's default is to lead the PC owner into generating a Microsoft account that takes the place of the Windows local PC account (ignoring the world of enterprise networked computers with server accounts). This actually began with Windows Live pre-Windows 10 but not completely. This means Microsoft can compete with Apple and Google by managing all user account information in their cloud and thereby provide the associated benefits of automatic syncing user account information on all of a user's Windows devices/platforms.

This is fine for those that prefer the Windows world and want to move into the benefits available to Apple and Google users for some time. Since I am not one of those, I choose not to live in Windows world and I use the Google apps that I have used since their inception.

To do this, you have to avoid the default creation of a Microsoft account in the initial configuration of a new Windows 10 install and create a local Windows account. To the non-initiated, not recognizing this difference can lead to issues such as your post seems to indicate, but could be due to other issues.

I think the upgrade to Windows 10 is a paradigm shift in several ways and I think the lack of understanding those shifts leads to much of the dissatisfaction with Windows 10. In my view (and others I think) it is the best Windows version to date. But I just use it as an operating system platform for non-Microsoft applications, not as a Windows world application platform.
