When it is legislation season here in Utah and I hear anybody say "We should do X because California does it" I want to slap them because California is not an example of good financial stewardship.

^^^This is a response to the post before this one.

No one can not be voted out of office. These people come up for re-election all the time, if they're doing a bad job vote 'em out. The problem seems to be that everyone blames every politician but their own. ๐Ÿ™‚

You hear all this talk about "term limits", but there already are in a way. Vote 'em out every time they come up for re-election. If they really are doing such a horrible job, how come they stay in office? Hmmm?

If/when I go visit California, I'll pay the fuel tax, sales tax, and any other consumer tax that hits me. When I leave, I don't pay anymore. Likewise when Californian's come visit my state (or any other state), they will reciprocate in kind.

I can't vote in California, and can't do anything about their taxes, so I really pay it no mind, and basically 'don't care'. Better to focus on those things I can try to do something about.

As far as federal taxes etc.. as WRVPO says, I can only vote for legislators in my district/state. And yes, as also WRVPO pointed out (maybe overlooked by FJ12ryder), we accept the fact the rule of the majority, but again, as he pointed out (and also overlooked, but restated), we don't have to like it.

I was too young to understand many things but understood when the temporary sales tax came along.
The only taxes I remember in the early fifties was small income tax, which most never had to pay, and about three dollars a year on however many acres Grand Mother had. Of course someone said they had a fishing license of .50 a year nd hunting and fishing was 3.00 a year. Now if you hunt deer and fish for trout it is over a hundred forty dollars a year. Have to have boating safety certificate for however much, including canoe sand logs, hunter safety certificate and so on.
If you forget to pay a tax you could lose your property, drivers license, rifle etc, fishing gear, car, freedom and so on.
Several have run the figures and illustrated that over half our income goes to taxes let aloen fees and fines and such. And don't pay any and lose your stuff.
We do work for Governments.
How do we change it since the once benefiting have perpetuated their positions in Governments and Organizations who spend a lot to keep their income from taxation coming?

Not every state has the ability for petition and referendum. But every state has elections. If you don't like what is happening get involved, find others that are like minded and make your voice heard. And regardless of what many say "get out and vote". If you don't vote you are accepting what happens whether you agree or not. Maybe it won't happen this time or the next but everything has a cycle and will change.

Just remember that ultimately "you" are responsible for those taxes.
If legislators (I only get to vote for one from my district, all the others are elected by other people) decide on a tax increase, why do I have to follow in lockstep agreement? I may have voted for another candidate in my district and have no say in all the others. This thinking is but another example of how "conventional wisdom" has taken over the concept of thinking for yourself. Because others have decided something is beneficial does not require you to agree. Yes, it becomes the law of the land, but you don't have to like it. And no, I am not responsible for a tax increase I do not support and was not supported by the legislative candidate(s) I either voted for or was represented by.

I can't understand why someone would boycott a state over a 20 cent hike per gallon of fuel. It's not like you live there and pay it everyday. I don't see threads of people boycotting Alaska with high fuel prices. California is a beautiful state with lots to offer.

Texas is in the process of building a high speed rail from Dallas to Houston with no public money. It is being built through private investors. Unlike California, no tax money is to be used. Look at Texascentral.com

Not entirely true. They are using eminent domain (a government power) and requesting government grants and loan subsidies.
If the project is successful and does not use public funds then go for it.
Unfortunately high speed rail does not pay for itself. Only a small number of HSR systems worldwide are profitable or breakeven.
I am not against any form of transportation as long as its benefit outweighs its cost but it should be the people of the areas choice not people from far away.
If a method works for that population then by all means use it but no one has the right to tell others how it will be for them.

And to the original subject of this string; if taxes are levied for a specified purpose and that purpose is delivered then great but if they are stated for one purpose and then used in some other way without the say of the people that is wrong.

Atlee, don't let the high fuel prices keep you from seeing the beauty of California. If you haven't seen the Sequoia's, they are breathtaking including so many other places in the State.

I have a picture of my great aunt and uncle in the early 1940's driving a late model 1930's Oldsmobile through a cut-out in a huge Sequoia, I repeated that trip in 2007 driving through a similar tree.

Are we excited about the fuel tax?, no.

One thing I like about living (part time) in the desert, is that I'm 75 miles from Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear Lake (has snow in the winter), 130 miles from the Pacific ocean, 80 miles to Borrego Springs, etc.

We'll be dead for a L O N G time, enjoy everything you can.

Safe travels,
