Go to South Pass and turn north right at the summit. Wide graded dirt road and go in about 1 mile. Lots of nice flat dispersed camping for several miles mostly on the west side of the road. The road itself continues north to a lodge and a FS campground by a lake. Driving further north takes you down paved switchbacks and where the river goes into the mountain a pops out a ways down the road. Continue from there and you're back in Lander. The Popo Agie wildness is nearby also. To the south side of the highway at South Pass is also the small mining town of Atlantic City. It is in a state park and very well preserved with lots of things to see.

Motor Vehicle Use Maps show areas available for dispersed camping. Referencing the MVUMs with the Google Maps satellite layer can reveal potential sites. A visit or call to the Ranger District can also gain you insight.

We camped here before. I know it's not that close, but in case you're looking for a place to stop along 80, it was decent. Lots of mosquitos though.

Lots of fish in a area where the river runs under ground for a while than out.
So big a world, so little time to see.
