Florida Hurricane I'm in the path

Well my first hurricane.
I am right on the edge of the evacuation area of Cedar Key.

Just bought a winter home in Florida. It needed a roof badly and I was proactive going into contract with a roofer. Only thing is he stiffed me on the start date. So here I sit with a roof that is till in need to be replaced in the middle of a hurricane. Praying it will stay on in 75 mile an hour plus winds.:(

Being a Northerner I always said the Floridians had it made. They get weeks of prior notice of a pending hurricane and pretty good prediction of exactly when it will hit. Plenty of time to prepare and/or leave.

Compared to us when a F5 Tornado hits we got maybe 10 minutes notice and more often than not zero notice.

Well as I sit here 'waiting' for the pending doom. I've changed my mind how well off the Floridans have it. The anxiety level of just sitting and waiting for it to hit is unbearable.

Prayers go out to all my fellow Floridians in the path of hurricane Hermine. Hope everyone stays safe. :C

We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned,
so as to have the life that is waiting for us.

I hope rockhillmanor made it through the storm ok. This story doesn't sound good. LINK

CEDAR KEY โ€” Residents of Cedar Key woke up Friday morning and began inspecting the considerable damage to their artsy, seaside village after Hurricane Hermine delivered storm surge flooding of at least six feet.........

fla-gypsy, aren't you more in NE area of FL? Have several co-workers that live in Jax, and my son is in Valdosta. Haven't heard from Jax folks, but my son was okay... other than being asked to check on a friend at 5 am. A friend called me to have him check on daughter. Her rental house had a tree fall and they had to be rescued from house. She wasn't hurt, just scared to death. Anyhow, hope all turn out okay.

Having been thru Charlie and Wilma, I hope everyone is well in all the areas affected by the hurricane. I always have to go to work when there is a hurricane as I'am a first responder. After the end of Oct. when I retire I'll be able to get out of dodge when there is a storm. Hopefully,Hermine is the one and only one to make landfall in the U.S. this year.

Hope you made it through OK, my advice is obviously too late for you, but others my find it helpful. Red Wine! We were without power for a bit after Ike, and lost everything in the fridge, warm beer sucks, but fortunately, my wife likes red wine, we had a few bottles by candlelight.

Bob, that happened for us also. We knew the roof was old and we knew it was coming for a replacement. didn't like the idea of spending the money tho ๐Ÿ™‚ so we waited a bit more and BOOM, a big hail storm hit us also.

called ins. co. and they checked and yes that hail storm did major damage to the roof and we got it covered also.

OP, stay safe!! I hope you get thru easily. BIG storms are scary for a reason so just take care of yourself!

Look at the bright side, now maybe the insurance company will pay for your roof. If it's not too late, buy some plastic and cover all you furniture and valuables, in case of leaks. I was figuring, after 19 years, I was close to needing a new roof, when a large hail storm hit while I was in Florida over the winter. When I found-out many people were having their roofs replaced I called my insurance company and told them I didn't know if I had a problem or not. They had the roof inspected and totaled it, and paid to replace it. As the saying goes, I'd rather be lucky than good any time.

The normal summer time storms we get here aren't much different than a cat 1, maybe 60 to 70 on the winds.
I totally agree, plan for the worst, hope for the best.
I doubt it'll be as bad as you are thinking.
You can't react, till after it is over.
After Andrew, with no power, I had to use up what was in the freezer first, had a 12volt tv plugged in to my truck , eating surf and turf.
Don't forget, your water heater has 30 gals of good drinking water stashed in it.
I bet you'll be amazed how many of your neighbors you meet.
The rest is why we have insurance.
Wishing you the best.

Trying to figure out where you get normal summertime storms of sustained 70 mph winds and get all those hurricanes.

rockhillmanor, run away while you still can. Houses can be fixed. People can't.

Well you may be better off with that old roof if it was laid correctly. I've seen FL roofs where staples were used (driven with too much pressure) an in a high wind huge sections of the shingles would flap like a bedsheet.

You get a lot of crappy work done at that FL $10/hr rate, even though you may be paying the head guy a lot more then that.

Good luck, hope the storm changes path.
