Georgia Trailer Registration Regulations

A friend is wanting to sell his California based Travel Trailer to a party in Georgia. Besides taxes and local fees does Georgia require any kind of physical inspection. He would like to sell it now (to a party in Georgia) and then worry about the buyer hauling it back to Georgia sometime next Spring 2017.

Any regulations or special taxes involved that he should be aware of? It's a 2011 fully functional Travel Trailer (not a Junker) to which he has the Pink Slip.

Anything else to look out for?

Boat trailers are treated slightly different in that they are not titled. Oddly enough TT are titled but 5'er are not.

New owner can take signed title to county tag office, change registration to GA and get a tag issued to them. When they get ready to bring home to GA, put the new tag on, and head East. Travel Trailers are treated like utility and boat trailers and not like autos/trucks in Georgia. Taxes are based on value and county where it is based. My county is lower than some around, but not the lowest in the state. It all depends on how well the county manages its finances and how sources of tax income there are in the county.

I think the problem may end up being that once you sell it, it will be registered to Georgia but still in California - is the buyer going to send you the plates and tags to put on the trailer while it sits? If not, is it going to be parked in a location where it could be seen by law enforcement (if so, then they're going to notice the expired California tags)? Are you going to have to move it anytime between now and when the buyer picks it up 6+ months from now?

Georgia has an ad valorum (property) tax on TT's. Payable annually on individuals birthday. Used to have the same for automobiles (to include self contained RV"s), but now those pay a one time tax of 7 percent

Not sure what the percentage for ad valorum annually is. I believe if you are the current owner, you just pay the registration fee and then the following year you pay the ad valorum. Believe you have to pay it up front if you are not the current owner.

Best recommendation - buyer call DMV.

When we moved from NJ to GA with our HTT, all we had to do was give them the current registration, title and $12 for the title transfer fee. The next registration will be due on the first person listed on the title's birthday.

There's only about half a dozen counties (out of 153) in GA that require inspections and that is only for emissions. If I am not mistaken, most of those counties are around Atlanta.

I'm not sure of all that will be needed but buyers should contact their local Tax commissioner which is the county office that would handle the title, taxes and tag.

I think is more about them getting it OUT of your state.

2 years ago.. I purchased a used travel trailer IN Georgia.. and took it to Ohio.

Georgia did not have sales tax on used trailers... and NO need for a 30 day tag, as give you that time to move it..
just a NEW Georgia Title in my name. 30 dollars. and NO inspection.

so I pulled it home without a tag (2 days travel) no issues with any state police.
