Last week we were coming back from some time spent in the great state of Washington. Enjoyed every bit of it until we were coming home. We planned on grossing the border at Peace Arch and we needed some fuel. I checked Gas Buddy and it showed the cheapest diesel in Bellingham Wa. was at Meridian Liquor store and Gas Bar. I filled up my truck $60.00 and went happily in to pay. Gave him my Mastercard and he gave me a slip to sign that said 61.86. I pointed out his error. He moved the newspaper on the counter, There was a sign that said they charged .10 cents per gallon to use a credit card. I pointed out how ridiculous that was and he told me: "What do you mean, that's cheap." I've never heard of such a charge. I hope this is not normal through out the USA.

Credit card surcharging is illegal in NY State:

N.Y. GBS. LAW ยง 518 : NY Code - Section 518: Credit card surcharge prohibited
No seller in any sales transaction may impose a surcharge on a holder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check, or similar means. Any seller who violates the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars or a term of imprisonment up to one year, or both.

They just call it a "cash discount" instead.

You guys refer to "cheapskate" as if it were the
scarlet letter. I wear the label with pride.

Dad raised me ... "Cholly (Brooklyn), money should be
as hard to spend as it is to earn".

Hidden fees , surcharges, additional taxes make me
twitch. I believe the type of manipulations the original
poster sites should be illegal. Amazing how some states
recognize that it is a problem and label it illegal.

Oh well, in the next 40 years (I wont be around) "cash" will
go the way of the Dodo. The world monetary system will probably
be based on "credits". Probably not worth the fight to change...
just another sign o' the times.

To Dog Folks and Jfmk, it's hardly a matter of 1.86. $60.00 fuel was only about half a tank. I'm not worried about an amount that won't buy me a coffee. As a retailer for many years, i can tell you that visa/mastercard charge about 2% per transaction. About .08 cents a gallon. So it grates on me that I have to pay his expenses or "costs of doing business" on top of his markup. These expenses should be paid out of this markup which is over what he pays the supplier.
It's totally a principal issue. What next, another .10 cents a gallon to pay for him to keep the lights on? Maybe another .10 cents to upgrade his pumps. It's a slippery slope. The consumer is being screwed constantly. Also, what happened to our cashless society? Sorry for the rant, but thanks for calling me a cheapskate! It's guys like you that make me so happy to be on this forum.

Just double checked all the posts. NO ONE called you a cheapskate.

It is the principle of the thing, I get that. But to rant on a forum and/or let $1.86 ruin my day? No thanks. Just is not worth it to me. You obviously differ and I respect that.

I personally, just would never give that particular retailer another dime of business. For $1.86 you gained valuable insights into this persons way of doing business. A cheap lesson.

It could have been a $500.00 repair or worse.

You're correct, you and jfkmk didn't call me a cheapskate. My apologies.
You did infer it though!

A triumph for the credit card companies!

Did they also succeed in getting legislation passed `prohibiting any Texas merchant from giving a customer a discount for paying cash?

So, you are driving a vehicle possibly hitting double digit mpg, and you are concerned about an extra $1.80 per $60 fill up? Time to trade it in for a Smart car and a pup tent.

No need for the FTC... the Texas AG, if handed decent evidence for a case, will be more than happy to step in.

Federal Trade Commission does not enforce Texas Laws. On a Federal Level it is now allowed to add a surcharge for the use of credit cards. You can surely notify the FTC, but they will tell you they have no jurisdiction or interest. It would be the equivalent of contacting the CIA if you saw someone going 40 in a 35. It might very well be illegal to drive 40 where they were, but the CIA won't do anything about it.
