Is Your Insurance Company on Your Side?

Are you a Full Time RVer? Even if you are a Part Timer, please review your insurance policies for what is covered and what is not.

We have been full time RVers for seven years and recently had to fly out of town for medical reasons. While we were gone, there was a storm that knocked out our power. RV refrigerators do not restart by themselves. The results were our food especially in the freezer spoiled and began to rot. Upon return it smelled like a decomposing body. We had to move out of our home.

We tried for a week using everything possible including commercial ozone machines and suggestions from funeral homes. All to no avail. We were forced to fill a claim with our insurance company to try and get the refrigerator/freezer replaced.

Guess what, if you have a power outage then your policy becomes null and void if you have the wrong insurance company. Think your policy covers an โ€œAct of Godโ€? So did we but if that tree that falls on your RV and causes a power outage or that lightening strikes causes a power outage all additional damage is not covered.

We were with AnPac (American National Property and Casualty Companies) for three years and found out their โ€œloop holeโ€ to deny claims was the โ€œpower outageโ€ clause. We called around and they are not the only ones who have and use this clause. Check your policies.

We are switching to Good Sam insurance. We would have been covered. Too little, too late for us in this case. Protect yourself.

My fridge starts itself. Just leave it on auto. Good to go.

Like I have said many times you are covered for everything except one thing.. That one thing is what ever went wrong. I have never had a claim that my insurance company covered. Never! I have had many insurance companies. As of right now I have Progressive. They cover everything except one thing>

Progressive didn't bat an eye at paying for replacing the windshield and passenger side window in our previous coach a few years ago following a bird strike. And there was no rate increase at renewal time.
OK then I have hope.. I have never filed a claim with them

99.9% of all animal impacts are settled under the Comprehensive portion of your physical damage coverage. 99% (or there abouts) of Comp claims don't result in rate increases.

12v from batteries, lp in tanks, 120v goes off, it switches to LP ..yes / No ?

do the Newer fridges "error code" and THEN refuse to operate, when power returns ? that is so dumb !

120v residential fridge, comes on, when power is restored
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

You said " rv refrigerator ". If it was an rv fridge, and you had it on " auto " it should have switched over to propane. Apparently, either, you had it on ac mode, or it is a residential refrigerator.

Without having paid extra for an umbrella policy doubt that food was covered in my s+b policy either.

Reading prior to signing is the best answer to your concern from my POV.
Insurance companies are in the business of making money. My job is to ensure that my policy makes sense for me.

I think what the problem may be is that an RV frig does not restart once power is restored. Your damage was as a result of the frig not restarting, not as a result of the power being off so long that the food rotted. If the power had been off for several days and this happened, you would have had coverage.

No insurance company is on the insured's side. They all seek ways to minimize claim payouts.

Thanks for the warning.
