Is Your Insurance Company on Your Side?

Are you a Full Time RVer? Even if you are a Part Timer, please review your insurance policies for what is covered and what is not.

We have been full time RVers for seven years and recently had to fly out of town for medical reasons. While we were gone, there was a storm that knocked out our power. RV refrigerators do not restart by themselves. The results were our food especially in the freezer spoiled and began to rot. Upon return it smelled like a decomposing body. We had to move out of our home.

We tried for a week using everything possible including commercial ozone machines and suggestions from funeral homes. All to no avail. We were forced to fill a claim with our insurance company to try and get the refrigerator/freezer replaced.

Guess what, if you have a power outage then your policy becomes null and void if you have the wrong insurance company. Think your policy covers an โ€œAct of Godโ€? So did we but if that tree that falls on your RV and causes a power outage or that lightening strikes causes a power outage all additional damage is not covered.

We were with AnPac (American National Property and Casualty Companies) for three years and found out their โ€œloop holeโ€ to deny claims was the โ€œpower outageโ€ clause. We called around and they are not the only ones who have and use this clause. Check your policies.

We are switching to Good Sam insurance. We would have been covered. Too little, too late for us in this case. Protect yourself.

To answer the question in the subject line:

Insurance companies, in fact all legit companies, are in business for one reason. TO MAKE A PROFIT.. Not to save you money but to MAKE A PROFIT.

Now it may sound like I am complaining.. But in fact this is how it shoudl be.
I mean if they do not make a profit, they go bankrupt and fold, leaving you without protection so they MUST make a profit.

How much profit? Well... That's where the complaints come in, So I'll make no further comment other than to say.. They do not make a profit when they pay a claim.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

after a semi "nicked" it. Still have the radios

You're painting with a pretty broad brush there. I'm no fan of some insurance companies, lawyers, and banks, but I don't think all of them are evil or that they are inherently evil.

Banks are a handy place to keep money, insurance is a way to protect oneself from financial ruin, and lawyers can be pretty handy when you get in trouble. I've availed myself of all three and was glad they're there.


Ya, I was. It is just something I say when someone mentions any of the 3. I've had both good and bad luck with banks and insurance companies.

I really have never had any luck with lawyers where I didn't end up feeling that I just paid them a lot of money to not do much. But, I have not needed them very often. (Knock on wood) .

You're painting with a pretty broad brush there. I'm no fan of some insurance companies, lawyers, and banks, but I don't think all of them are evil or that they are inherently evil.

Banks are a handy place to keep money, insurance is a way to protect oneself from financial ruin, and lawyers can be pretty handy when you get in trouble. I've availed myself of all three and was glad they're there.

I caught that too. BUT with that said, Hanover/Citizen's Insurance was tops when our rental car was broken into. They went out of their way to make sure we got what we deserved.

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be

Insurance companies are the worlds 3rd greatest evil. Just after Lawyers and Banks. You must have insurance in some cases and you maybe want it in others just in case it helps. But, you can not depend on it. They will wiggle and worm their way out of anything they can.

The things they will not cover typically are "an act of God"..

My Homeowners insurance will not cover my home fridge dying, they will not pay for replacement nor will they cover the food that had spoiled in it.. I am not sure as to why you would have expected the insurance company to cover a RV fridge replacement..

That IS LIFE.

Buy a new fridge and get on with life.. Yeah they are not cheap but that IS the gamble you took with a RV..

Actually, the homeowners policy on our Adirondack cottage does cover refrigerator/freezer food loss subject to the deductible. As I recall, many other HO policies do as well, but I don't know about full time RV'ers insurance.

Did a check of my policy and I'm covered for up to $750.00 of spoilt food IF the loss is due to appliance or power failure within my initial policy. My umbrella add-on really concerns itself mostly with additional liability insurance .

Good grief..

You are correct Rice. Umbrella is additional coverage, above and beyond your other policies.

OP has not said what happened either. Guess it was a residential fridge??? Or, just expects insurance to pay for his ooops by not have his rv fridge on auto??

if I depart my trailer for a few days. I empty the Fridge. and power down the trailer, remove water hose... just like its in storage. because it is.

all over the internet the power at campgrounds are not dependable..
personally I have never had a power problem at any campground.. but the stories are out there.

regardless what TV commercials state.
Insurance Companies are NEVER on your side.. stock holders side "YES"
they are to Earn money. NOT pay it out.

The same here on auto start. Or actually just a switch from ac to propane and then back to ac when the power comes back on. Never a problem here and this happens a lot in various RV parks.

Yup, they all should restart themselves whether on auto or not. We have power outages at our summer site in the Adirondacks all the time and the fridge always restarts even though I leave it on AC power all the time.
