Yes, I realize there are more critical issues at hand resulting from the potential government shutdown than my upcoming trip to Cataloochee to view the elk...HOWEVER, I did spent a good bit of time 6 months ago on the Reserve America website securing my "perfect" site AND, have been preparing for this adventure for several weeks. Since we are leaving the RV at home and electing to tent camp for this adventure due to the steep and winding entrance road to the campground (at the advise of several here on this site), I have also invested a ton of time and a good bit of money getting our tent camping gear in shape. Also, at the direction of many experienced tent campers, I have frozen block ice, prepared easy to re-heat frozen meals as well as a ton of general preparation now only to find out that our trip may in fact be cancelled due to this shutdown which by the way will cost our National Parks millions in revenue. And finally, when will we know if there is a shutdown? Well, we are scheduled to leave on Oct 1. Yes, I am annoyed! Oh well, thanks for letting me vent. There will always be another trip at another time if things don't come together for this trip.

I'd vote for him IF that would happen!!!

Elk can be seen every evening in the Smokement area. And, since Rte. 441 through GSMNP can't be closed down, one can still see the elk that hang out there every evening.

The way we avoid a shutdown is to pass and live by a balanced budget. As far as the current multi-trillion dollar debt, perhaps the Chinese would take California as payment in full. That leaves us Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado and Montana for RVing. I'd miss Yosemite, but the Zion, Bryce, Yellowstone, Arches and RMNP circuit would compensate.

Build a backup plan. I dont know where you are going or what you like to do but I've camped in free spots that were far better than many campgrounds. As I travel I try to do it for free and then break loose of bucks when its something that requires a pay for site. As I move along I dont rely on one place to pop into. It may be a Wally world but but I like to have 2 or 3 choices.

Try to plan 2 trips and adjust as needed. Let those useless sob's kiss yer hind and do something else. You're dealing with derilects.

Two years ago everyone said "there will be no shutdown". We were on BLM land in Moab.....it shut down, they kicked us off the piece of dirt we were on (NO amenities). Guess where we are this year!!!!! I don't trust them, so we're making reservations for PRIVATE campgrounds. I can't believe they did it 2 yrs ago, now it won't surprise me (yeah, shut down the moneymakers).

Good luck....I feel for you!

Agreeing with the majority.: no shutdown in October.
Now December is up for grabs and given recent events only time will tell. I will say I kinda doubt that it will happen at the end of the year given the current climate and election cycle. The "little people" who vote are getting peeved at the thought of a shutdown and despite many polis'thunk that we remember little of the past we do recall anything that inconveniences us.
