Leer Toppers let me down

On March 6th I ordered a Leer 550 fiberglass tonneau cover and paid the local dealer 50%. They told me it would be "2-3 weeks".

After 3 weeks, I called dealer to check on status and she had to call factory. Said she would call me back. She did not call back so I called her THREE days in a row and she kept telling me that Leer was not responding to her emails. She finally said the "factory hadn't started it yet and didn't know when they would". When I told her I need it by May, she told me "if you don't like it, take your business somewhere else".

I did!

It doesn't matter if dealer was negligent in not sending my order or if Leer dropped the ball. The attitude shown by both was against all rules of business practices! Neither seemed to care about it.

It should be simply "get the job done and satisfy the customer".

The dealer also had the nerve to tell me that my 50% deposit was non-refundable. We had words about that until she realized that my credit card company would back me up and especially on an unfulfilled order.

The whole thing was a disappointing experience.

Like many others has said you can't blame Leer unless you know for certain that the dealer had indeed placed the order. Personally I rather doubt that the order was placed when they told you it was. I think it's time to name the Dealer!

I agree, name the dealer.

I want to call them tomorrow and ask their turn a round time on a leer.

I will never buy another LEER product. We bought two trucks a few months apart. Took both to the local LEER dealer and bought camper shells for them.
Fast forward two years. The windows in my shell couldnโ€™t be slid open. The plastic track insert in the frame had buckled and warped to the point the windows were jammed.
Tried to get a response from LEER to get some new track. Their response was a snotty we wonโ€™t deal with you, go to your dealer.
Went to the local dealer. They claimed it was my fault that the track had buckled. I still donโ€™t know how they figured that one out. All I did was buy the thing and have it installed on my truck. After a couple of tense visits trying to get them to take care of it, I said ok, just go ahead and order the track and Iโ€™ll put it in.
Months later, without receiving the trackโ€ฆ(various excusesโ€ฆ never the dealers fault). I was in the back of the truck during an antelope hunt. It was August and hot. I pulled the warped track out, cut out the straightest chunks and put them back in with big gaps between them. Not dust proof, but at least I could open the window.
With LEERโ€™s policy of ignoring the customer, even if I discount the local dealer being useless, I wouldnโ€™t buy another product from LEER.

I enjoyed my LEER's. Your dealer sounds like a lemon.

I would guess he is not happy with LEER on the comment that they don't know when they will get around to it but that could be a lie, who knows.

Definitely find a new dealer, the LEER dealer that I go to in MA jumps through hoops to get your business.

You could have dealt with a really bad dealer, I wouldn't necessarily blame Leer unless I talked to them directly. However this dealer sounds really lousy, and maybe they don't like to deal with Leer, or vice versa. ๐Ÿ™‚

Maybe the same dealer that couldn't tell a customer how a waste valve works?..:S

BTW - OP - you put the bad juju on Leer - name the DEALER !!

Maybe the long delay is Leer's fault, maybe not. Many manufactures cut back these days and do not make production runs on products until they have a certain quantity of orders to fill. One thing for sure, you dealt with a bad dealership.

X2. Have had two trucks with ARE's and have been very happy.

How would it be Leers fault? If they never received the order then they couldn't start the build. Unless Leer lost the order which doesn't seem like the problem. The 1st clue is that the dealer never called you back for 3 days.
I bought a Snug Top for my last truck. The dealer always kept me informed. I'd find a different dealer and stick with the Leer as that's what you wanted in the 1st place.

From your post, I can't see why you're upset with Leer. It sounds like you never contacted them. Did they ever receive your order ?

Exactly. I am sure the order was not placed when you paid the deposit. Leer has always had an amazingly fast turnaround. Your dealer was using your cash to pay other bills.

I have had great success with Leer tonneau covers. I have purchased three 700 Series tonneau covers from Truck N America over the last five years. Each time, I only had to give a $200 deposit, and I had my cover installed within two weeks. My most recent cover was installed about ten days after I placed the order over the phone. The paint is a perfect match and the fit is perfect.

I think you were dealing with a worthless distributor who held onto your (excessive) deposit for as long as possible before ordering your cover from Leer. I'm sorry your experience was bad, but I don't think you should think poorly of Leer because of it.

IDman, I understand and totally agree. Similar thing happened to me with a Leer Dealer. Dealer told me "we make no money on the toppers, its a loss leader to get customers in to buy an RV". I own a small business...I'm not stupid. You don't sell $2,000 toppers for NO PROFIT. I called him on it and he told me all dealers have to have the same price. I wasn't concerned about the price...but called him on it again by saying you just told me you lied about not making a profit...how can all leer dealers sell for same price but make no profit?

In the end, i bought an ARE, different dealer who didn't give me BS.

Getting harder to find honest businesses. I'd be upset if the dealer dropped the ball (or the factory)....but the truth is better.
