Newbie needs 5th wheel hitch advice, please.

Getting ready to hook a new 5th wheel to a new-to-me truck. I've never had a 5th wheel or TT before. The combo is a Silverback 37MBH and a 2013 F350 long bed 4x4. According to Silverback, the empty pin weight is 1940# and the empty 5er is 12650#. What generally am I looking for? Do I need a slider or does the long bed make that worry go away? I'm open to suggestion and advice. Thanks much.

I have a "Draw-Tite" 16K hitch. It is mounted to the truck frame thru the bed. The hitch legs and receiver itself or easy to take out of the bed. Also, the receiver pivots sideways and back and forth--very important feature. Where the arm attaches to the receiver there is a place to put a lock so the arm can not be pulled accidentally or on purpose--say at a fuel stop while you are inside paying the bill. I have pulled my 5vr from So. Ca. to Florida--to northern B.C. and many points in between with no problems--probably 25-30,000 miles. Lars

$1295 is too high IMHO. Price the hitch from a reseller then add three hours labor.

Thanks all. The dealer has suggested a Husky 16, which he would sell and install for $1295. It that a decent hitch? Old biscuit, it looks like the next Husky step up is a 23K. At that price, am I making his Mercedes payment?

Definitely high on the total price.

Have him quote the rails plus install and then shop for your hitch.

There are lots of good hitches available at reasonable prices and they just drop into the rails.

No slider needed. Don't cheap out on the hitch. Get at least a 16K rated hitch. Can't go wrong with Pullrite, B&W, Curt, or Reese. Some have multiple models, don't get the cheapest model available if they have more than one.

If your F350 has factory hitch prep, get one to fit that. Works well and leaves the bed flat when you take it out.

Look at the GVWR of that 5vr........then purchase a hitch that is at least rated for 1000# more than the GVWR of 5vr.

Example.....GVWR of 5vr 16K-------purchase hitch with rating of 18K

Also it makes it much easier to hitch/unhitch when 5vr hitch is a 4-way articulating head (pivots side to side & front to back)

Long bed truck...sliding hitch not needed
