Imagine the fate of the poor driver who was on their side on the side of the road... (Rollover) ON-Star got their location via GPS, called me, I swung a remote camera around and layed eyes on and sent troopers.. On-star was able to tell me they were not seriously hurt (Some burns from the bomb blowing up in their faces is all) (What bomb.. the air bag of course).

Yup, that happened.

Travel a lot and wife feels that it is a must have. You can negotiate the fees. Renewed ours for $159.06 that included all taxes and fees. Received 4 months additional at no charge for a total of 16 months. We allow our Sirius to lapse and after a couple of months they send a letter reducing the cost by greater than half with no reactivation fee.

OnStar is great and very handy if you live in an area with no cell phone reception. We canceled ours after the free trial.

I have been able to summon assistance in areas where I had no cell reception, and I have used it for diagnostics issues (check engine light). Push a button and ask what the issue is and they will identify the problem and tell you if it is safe to keep on driving. They will even put you in touch with the nearest GM dealer, if required. The other advantages of having ONSTAR have been well documents above, so I won't try to sell you on it, other than to say I have it on two vehicles and plan to keep it.

For us it was a life saver...we had pulled into a truck stop to fuel up. Both dogs were in the truck...DH outside ready to fuel, I started to walk into the store to have the pump started.

As I walked away I heard the tell tale "click" of the door lock...looked back to see our little Poodle mix with her front paws on the door happily wagging her tail. She had stepped on the door lock...both cells phones and all keys were in the truck...PANIC time!

Then I remembered Onstar...borrowed a phone from a trucker...called Onstar from the sticker on the window (luckily I remembered to put them on)...after the rep stopped laughing...the door magically opened in less than two minutes!!

We too will never be without it...

My dog locks me out all the time. I keep a spare key hidden under the car. Cheaper then on-star.

Our only exposure to On-Star was when we purchased our new 2012 GMC Canyon in November 2012. As a courtesy (and to get the customer started), it was activated at the dealer. To introduce us to one of the many services, they had it give us turn by turn directions to our home about 5 miles away. We had other places to go other than home, so I tried to get it to SHUT UP by issuing "Cancel Directions" several times. It never would stop telling where to go... so when we eventually got home, it was satisfied. Never again would I ask it for directions.

We were also asked for a credit card number during the setup so they could do auto-renew at the end of the "free" 6 month period. I kindly declined, but got a bit of guilt trip from the operator on it. I understand that it is their business to make money on these services, but I respond to guilt trips by keeping my money in my pocket.

However, even after the service expires, one can still use the Bluetooth feature to pair a cell phone to the car for hands-free calling. That's a nice feature, but as we use the pickup as our recreational and occasional hauling rig, we don't tend to spend much time in it. Worse yet, I've talked on the cell while heading down the road all of 2-4 times over the last decade.

With today's laws regarding cell use while driving... the handsfree is useful for those that do tend to chat a lot.

For some, On-Star is something they cannot live without, for other like us, it's a waste of time and money, a required additional cost (for the builtin electronics & hardware) on an already way-overpriced product.

The only vehicles I know that will open when you pull on the handles are Fords (front doors only -- the back doors require the locking knob) and BMWs where you pull the handle once to unlock, second time to open.

I think the Ford SYNC is a decent balance. It uses one's existing phone via BlueTooth, so if there is a wreck, it will use that to notify EMS. It will use the paired phone for status reports. However, other than that, it doesn't phone home without advance warning.

My GM has the lock knobs that you can just pull up by hand to unlock the door manually! Did they get rid of these?

It's about $20 a month...if you pay monthly. If you purchase for a year, or multiple years, the cost goes down (per month).

It's like having another insurance policy; you may never need it, but if you do, you'll sure be glad you have it especially if you're in an accident. It will notify you immediately to see if you're alright and if you need assistance of any type. If you don't answer them, it will call authorities.

Not always, I was involved in a fatal crash in my wife's new Yukon and the On star didn't work. The force of the impact exploded the battery and the unit lost power. This was about 4 years ago. Had to wait for somebody to come by with a cell phone to get us help. They may have backup power on the new units. I still have On star on all three of my vehicles and to Ron's point I still feel a bit more comfortable with it.

Ya, and this is one of the reasons I don't like GM vehicles. The doors lock themselves (which you can disable thankfully) but, you can't un-lock the door by pulling up on the inside door handle. I had a friend that got in a car accident and the car caught on fire because they were able to get out quickly they did not get burned. But, the fire flashed up quickly if they had been in a GM vehicle, and since the battery was ruined, they would have been burned by the time they found the manual un-lock button. Same thing if your car goes in a lake. I want to be able to grab the door handle and get out quickly.

very few cars will open when the doors are locked by simply pulling the handle....very few

First let me point out that I live in a area where crime is not a problem so I'm not worried about someone stealing my truck. The pickup I have now came with it but, the previous owner never paid for it so it was not activated. I pulled the fuse on it because I heard a story that the on star people can listen in on what you say and watch every place you go with your vehicle. That's not a big concern but, I like as much privacy as I can get (in the modern world) and so that is why I pulled the fuse.

We love on -star - it tells you directions but can tell you where to buy things, where to find your favorite resturant or type of food, nearest campground, gas etc. and they really make an effort to give an answer.

I had the free trial period but never bought the service. I think of it as a 3,000 pound cell phone with comparable cost.

I even unplugged the harness last year because it was in the way of my dash cam and I was tired of the lights on the mirror.

I have never continued past the free period as I just can't see the value. My brother wouldn't do without it in either of his vehicles and he is waaaaaay more thrifty when it comes to money than I.

It all comes down to personal choice. Activate it for a while and see for yourself. If you then see value for your situation, keep it.
