one legged camping

I'm going to try my first camping trip since my right leg was amputated last month. Been driving my car for the last 2 weeks, so am confident about taking the MH out. I reserved an ADA site at Salt Fork State Park in Ohio, 45 minutes from us, for 2 nights this week. The weather looks perfect, no more doctor's appointments for a couple of weeks, so I hope to have an enjoyable time.

It's great to read you had a good experience, Richard. My partner is a right side above the knee amputee (8 years ago) who is not able to wear a prosthetic. Two years ago we took our Little Guy Teardrop camper and went on a 4 month adventure out west hitting 12 national parks/forests. It was an awesome experience. We just upgraded to a 2015 Flagstaff Micro Lite 21DS travel trailer with a murphy bed floor plan. John's wheelchair works great inside with this floor plan and after much research regarding access options have decided to install a personal lift. We wish for you and your wife as many happy adventures as we've had and plan to continue to have.

Roy Ken is absolutely correct! I had this happen to me on our last trip. I was trying to connect to the hydrant at our campsite while sitting on my mobility scooter, & the camp staff actually scolded me (politely, mind you) to ask for help when it was needed. He then connected our coach to the hydrant for me.

What a great story. I hope everything is going well for the OP. It is great inspiration to me since I just had my right foot amputated 3 days ago.

Good for you Richard! My brother-in-law lost both legs above the knee. He and my sister-in-law camp in their MH all over the country, along with their 2 dogs. He does much of the driving (hand controls of course) and she does most of the set-up.

He has done the set-up when her back was out. He said he could do it, but it took him 10 times as long. They didn't really care though because they were still traveling and camping!

Sorry for not getting back here sooner. The 2 night trip went well. The biggest thing I learned was I was not able to really do anything to help my wife- loading the MH, setting up at the campground, or any little chore throughout the day. This bothers me, I like to help her out. She said I could help best by staying out of her way and not falling. I almost fell once, thank goodness Forest River puts a big hand rail right inside the door. But we had a very enjoyable time. I was comfortable driving and no problems, wasn't sure how I would do not having a right leg. I see the doctor again in 2 weeks, hopefully he will say OK to leave for Florida. And, hopefully the weather will still allow travel next month.

You are an inspiration to me looking at my future with severe back/ hip disorders.

Good for you. No reason you can't camp. Met a one legged man last winter in Texas. He had a beautiful FW and managed normally as far as I could tell. Things might go a little slower at first but I'm sure you can adjust.

I can't believe you are out and about after only 1 month post amputation. When I lost my fingers on one hand due to an accident, I was 1 month under heavy pain meds, and then many months still experiencing phantom pains. I was very much incapacitated for many months, let alone learning to function in a finger-less world. I still experience phantom issues, the primary one being an uncontrollable urge to scratch my fingernails on the missing fingers because they itch. Who ever heard of fingernails itching?
