Plate / Dishes storage in small camper

Hi,

Was not sure where to post this, but here it is.

We are in a small travel trailer again, but not crying there. We have used the same method of storing plates and dishes in all campers we have owned. But for some reason, I am not happy with it any more. Looking for ideas, even if I need to build something. I have a shop.;)

This is what we have... If is a vinyl coated corner "shelf" which sits in the cabinet with the melamine plates and bowls horizontal on it. While on the road the dishes side off into the cabinet, ready to attack the unsuspecting person who opens the cabinet once parked again.:S Usually me! I was thinking a vertical rack system (plates turned up on edge)may work better. All units I find pictures online require a lot of space and the plates have individual slots. I was wondering if there is a solution out there that would hold breakfast plates in one slot, dinner plates in another, and bowls in another. The catch is, that I want the rack to hold the plates while driving as well as parked. I have some ideas, but do not want to over engineer / build this. As I mentioned the plates and bowls are melamine material, so they are durable and do not require separation. Thanks.

What kind of dishes do you have in this rack? I am replacing my melamine with Corelle and wonder how they would do.

I do have this rack which is similar, but slightly different. In previous RV, it was hard to get plates out, because cabinet was too short. Had to tilt entire rack forward.

I have a wire rack generally similar to this one in my motorhome, as left by the previous owner. It works quite well in general; it takes a pretty substantial bump or sideways rock to have anything come out of it. I do have the sections pretty well filled, which I suspect helps.

Anyhow, I think it may be the kind of thing you're looking for.

Maybe something as simple as placing a wood block or similar under the front edge of the shelf a let gravity pull the dishes to the back of the cabinet. Maybe some kind of a strap on the front of the shelf for travel and then remove once you are set up.

We use paper plates whenever possible.

We use the corner shelf you described. We have it in the back corner of the cabinet, plates stacked and bowls on top. We then use the space in front of it to store tall items such as powered coffee creamer, Sugar in a cardboard canister, etc. in front of the shelf. Has worked for us for years.

It's not very convenient but you might try putting a piece of the vinyl shelving material (sometimes called Slip Stop) between each dish. It works wonders.

I stand my plates up in a the back part of a basket. The glass coffee pot occupies the front part of the basket. No problems with this in almost 30 years of small RVs.

I tried all of those and found them all to be annoying more than helpful. Now, I just stack them - dinner plates on bottom, salad plates in middle, bowls on top. Then I have serving bowls, etc. on the sides so they don't slide around in the cupboard. Haven't lost a dish yet - even during my Great GPS Adventure.

I pull the top dish out to use and after cleaning put it on the bottom so I get equal usage.
