Anyone ever camped at Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta? We went to Stone Mountain, Braves game, and Six Flags on vacation about 10 years ago. I'd like to go back and stay in the camper this time. Camp ground looks pretty nice from web. Anyone ever camped here????

We've camped at Stone Mountain a few times several years ago. Being in park is very convenient. From what I remember, only real problem is some sites are very unlevel.

Other options a little further out would be the Corp parks on Lakes Lanier or Allatoona.

We have camped at Stone Mountain several times. Always find the park well-maintained with great staff. We have taken our grandchildren a couple of times and they love the park. The proximity to the downtown Atlanta area worked great for us to do our "day trips". We have been there a couple of times during the 4th of July Laser Show on the Mountain! Fantastic!! I don't think you'll be disappointed with your stay no matter when you can go.

Sorry, but no.

We visit Atlanta several times per year, and always stay at Stone Mountain Park. Expensive....yep. Well maintained...yes, only game in town if you're wanting activities in metro Atlanta...yes.

We try to book on trail F, Trail C or Trail E as most of these sites are level. There are other good sites around the park, but there are some not-so-level sites also. If you happen to get a site that is not level, the office, upon request, will try to relocate you if other sites are available.

Wifi is great when the park is 60% empty. Bandwidth is marginal when the park is full.

An almost unknown campground is the horse park in Conyers, but it is a long way out of town.

We stayed at Chattahoochee State Park a couple of years ago and really liked it. A bit out of Atlanta, but quick access on the freeway. Nice new park too.

Although it's a ways outside of the city I've been wanting to check out Don Carter State Park. It's Georgia's newest park and looks very nice. Plus, I like to support the state park system. As for private campgrounds actually in the Atlanta area I'm not very familiar, but I'm sure there must be some.

No problem, nothing wrong with asking! Stone Mountain used to be our go to place when "up north" but the last few years not so much. In fact, we used to have a season pass back when it was a state park, but since being sold off and becoming a "theme park" it hasn't been nearly as nice. To your original question, the campground is usually too crowded, not to mention expensive, for my taste.
