Tesla S w/TrailManor

We did an overnight at Los Banos/I-5 KOA and this rig was parked behind us. Note the cable for the Tesla parallel to the trailer. Two things are interesting, first a Tesla S pulling a Trailmanor and two the cord from the pedestal to the Tesla is smaller than the cable to the trailer. There is no dog bone so I can only guess it is plugged in to the 20 amp CB.

The rig came in after we did and we did not notice it until the next morning. We left early and never saw the owner. I have no idea about any of the specs but the campground is more than 250 miles from Torrance where the trailer had been loaded. There was a temporary parking permit for loading and unloading and it had been issued by the Torrance PD.

Chances are you great grandfather said something similar when he saw the first car.
Maybe even farther back than that. Ferdinand Porsche built the first practical electric/gas hybrid vehicle in 1901. There were electric cars all over Europe and the US.
When cheap gasoline became available, everyone shifted to the fuel driven cars because of price, speed, and range of travel.

The Tesla X is no toy. There are number of drag race videos, online, and the Tesla seems to the winner every time. I think the latest loser was that new Dodge with the big HP.

80,000 is the gross, We need an empty wt to know how much payload it can haul You need a 50,000 lb payload to compete in todays market

What kind of pay load can that Tesla truck haul ? Wonder what the Tesla tractor trailers empty wt. is ? Can you inmagin a truck stop with charging terminals at all parking spots ? I wonder how big a charging cord it will take? With 50 trucks charging at the same time could need a power generating station next door. Do you think it can load 25 tons ?

Tesla semi can pull a full 80,000 pound GCWR legal load. Today it uses multiple charging cords to charge multiple packs in parallel so the load is not really any greater than a few Model S or X vehicles charging at the same time (120kW peak per cord). The megacharger that is being developed for the semi is apparently 1.6MW peak so equivalent to a 2200HP electric motor or a small fraction of an electric arc furnace used for steel smelting.

permit to park the thing on the street where he lived so he could load it for the trip

city of Torrance restricted parking size , length etc..

with the approved PD permit, parking patrol could not ticket them

Thank you.

The Tesla model X plugged into the 20 amp outlet is charging at 3 miles per hour. Between Torrance and Los Banos, there are 6 Superchargers which would give him 80% range in 40 minutes. Assuming he has a 100 kw battery without the trailer his range would be 290 miles max. Some say pulling the trailer to expect 1/2.

Our 2014 Tesla Model S and 2017 Model X have had no major problems...

That Model X with trailer attached has more accelerating power than ANY vehicle in the campground even without a trailer.

Toy golf cart? Call it what you like as it passes you like you were standing still.
How's that acceleration after a couple hundred miles? As has been said many times, EV's have their place, but right now a campground isn't very likely to see very many.

Every time a Wally-docking post comes up thereโ€™s a bunch of โ€˜maximum of 300 miles or 3pmโ€™ people coming out of the woodwork.

Now all of a sudden โ€˜a couple hundred milesโ€™ is a minimum performance standard.

Funny how times change.........

Tesla semi says hi and laughs at your little pickup.
Yeah, where's all those Tesla semi's? Is it going to laugh after 500 miles, oh yeah, I forgot, it won't go 500 miles.

And Elon Musk is also laughing at you from the top of his pile of money!

Seriously though, thereโ€™s very limited application still for this and this is very unique. 99% of us, Iโ€™m guessing, couldnโ€™t make this work. I need to be able to run 500-800mi if necessary, loaded , in a day. Couldnโ€™t stop for recharge brakes unless they didnโ€™t take longer than it takes me to take a leak and buy some beef jerky! Plus havenโ€™t seen any EV charging stations in the wilderness. My Honda genny would be in overdrive full time! Can you charge and drive at the same time?

And this kind of thinking is what makes it so difficult to sell EVโ€™s!
