Theft

I am always amazed by the amount of worry folks express about their gear being stolen.
How many have actually, personally had something stolen while camping?
Please restrict yourselfs to personal experience only while on the road or camping.
I don't want answers about your brother in law,or storage or driveway theft.
Never in my life have I had a theft, and I am extremely lax in the security department.
I know that crime can occur anytime anyplace, and am just trying to determine whether the concern displayed by many is real or paranoia

Lost a BBQ lighter 11 years ago, it was sitting on the picnic table next to my grill. Must have walked off on it's own! :E I never lock anything other than the coach door when we leave the site.

We had an expensive mountain bike and a portable radio stolen in Jacksonville ,Fl. Chain the bikes up at night now, and remember to bring "stuff" in at night.

40 years of camping, here's my list:
Pack of hotdogs out of cooler by Racoon (tent)
Pack of hotdogs off picnic table by Racoon while putting stuff away (TT)
Pack of marshmallows off the chair right next to me by Racoon.(TT)
And in my youth, bag of pot by unknown source (suppose it could have been Racoons since they didn't take my wallet and left my money) (tent)
Over the years I've had nothing but help from my fellow campers. Have had patio furniture put under my awning during storms, have had my awning lowered or retracted in the past. Have come back to my tent zipped shut and one time in S.D. in the Badlands during a hail storm had a MH camper drop my tent down to protect my tent poles.

After putting our "Slow, Grandparents at Play" sign out in numerous campgrounds over the last few years, it was stolen while we were at St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach, FL in March of this year. We chalked it up to spring break and the large number of kids partying in the campground while we were there. Disappointing but not too surprising.

Nope, never. Always leave lawnchairs, the grill, citronella candles, firewood, etc. out all week while we're gone.

way back in the late 80's we had one of two lawn chairs, a small step ladder, a 20-amp extension cord and our door mat stolen from our campsite. never could figure why the thugs left the other lawn chair...the chairs were the really nice stainless steel variety. this occurred on the last sunday of the covered bridge festival in brown county, Indiana in a nearby state park. we didn't have a toad in those days and used the MH to tour. we left camp in the morning and when we returned in early afternoon we discovered the theft.

In March, in Stephen Foster State Park, we had the hook to put the equalizer bars on stolen. We left it on the battery box like we usually do and it was gone when we went to use it. We blamed it on kids wanting a toy to play with because we like to believe that adults wouldn't do that. We got the bars on without it and bought another one at a local camping world. The $20 taught us to lock up things we would rather not live without.
